If you consider that "you" is meant to refer to the majority on this forum perhaps you may be less insulted.
The argument is not going to be won, speed limits are not going to be rescinded and drivers (including me) are not going to be allowed to "drive at an appropriate speed" without a maximum allowed speed being in existence.
And if you think the situation is bad, it's only going to get worse. If Ken Livingstone has his way (and he's working on it) within 10 years there will be no cars in London.
If the rest have their way, the same with the country.
The whole ideology of motorised personal transport is going to become under attack soon (if it isn't already)
But - we have no rail structure.. no decent public transport - snd unless you have an attractive package.. people will use cars.
Noris it practical to expect us all to ride bikes either.. some people just do not have the stamina or health.. and some like us live some distance from work. Please do not glibly say move nearer as you can pay a fortune for a lesser spacious property assuming one is available where you are working anyway. And what if you are forced to relocate./. change jobs.. become redundant?
Lot of expense and you need the security before you even think of such a move in most cases.
As for mass bike riding.. I should really get my sister-in law- to upload her photos and a video of her and her husband riding in China. She says she found this a very un-nerving experience and was for once in her life experiencing fear whilst riding her bike on a road. I have seen her film and unless she uploads it to the net to make it viewable for all - you will just have to take my word that mass riding has some other problems and would lead to a lot of legislation in Europe should we all take to cycling instead. After all.. replace the millions currently driving . with cyclists.. and you have whole new road safety and HSE policies and fines,. and responsibilities.

Muesli munchers hate us when we mention this.. but it is a home truth
Cars though .. manufacturers are always making improvements .. and we already have some "green and fast models" Red Ken has a sell by date - though I admit he did actually gain my approval by supporting Jack Straw's comments on the wearing of those veils.
NHS has wasted a fortune on garments pandering to pee-cee idoelogy. I need to see a face.. see the complexion.. see a tongue .. see the expression to diagnose correctly
French barring of any religious emblem in schools really began when a woman died after a car crash because her Muslim husband insited she was treated by a female doctor. By the time they summoned the woman surgeon - the woman had died. French government made a decision and BOF! Zut Alors! Complaints - yes - but - no wailing nor issuing fatwas or being taken seriously as here and pandering
