The A5 between Hinkley and Tamworth keeps changing along its length from a single lane to a dual carriageway. At one point it opens to a dual carriageway, with central reservation but on the approach the right hand lane has white cross hatched lines painted on it to prevent access :!: . Half way down there is a camera. The national speed limit sign is there but nothing to indicate if it is a 60 limit or a 70 limit (single or dual carriageway).

Anybody got any ideas what the speed limit should be?

Its a fair way down the A5 from Hinckley to Tamworth mate, are you talking Tamworth to Nuneaton/Atherstone or Hinckley end? Some parts on Nuneaton/Atherstone to Tamworth are 50mph. Where exactly are you talking about?
Are you talking about Redgate Junction (A444)?

If it has a central reservation (i.e. a strip of grass or raised concrete) separating the carriageways, then it's a dual carriageway and the NSL is 70.

It's still a dual carriageway even if it has been hatched off to only give one lane in each direction - the definition is the presence of a central reservation.

I suppose it's a moot point how long a central island to protect right turners has to be to become a section of central reservation - how long is this particular one?

"Dual carriageway" is defined by the central reservation, so it's 70mph for cars unless otherwise signed.

Gizmo - from your description, it would appear to be the Redgate Junction, the one with a dual carriage way on one side, with cameras on both sides, the one in the atherstone to hinkley direction half hidden behind its own sign and a tree.(REDGATE is where the A444 crosses the A5).
The next set of cameras to the best of my knowledge are around HINTS.
I posted on this on 30/oct,(SEARCH UNDER REDGATE) queerying the speed limit -i recon that the bit from hinkley is 70 as it still is dual carriage way - nice to see others agreeing with me.
Very hypocritical of the scamera partnership - if safety was the important idea - why not engineer the junction to stop accidents(CAN WARKS DO THIS -DOUBT IT) ,THEN REDUCE the limit accross this junction before adding cameras - sounds like a case of "OH CAMERAS ARE THE UNIVERSAL CURE AND IF NOT WE'LL MAKE SOME CASH!!)
BYthe way - HGV DRIVERS - there is mention on other sites Warwickshire scamera partnership have set up cameras to detect HGVs over 40.
From contacts this appears to be one -BEWARE
