Yeah, I think that's a critically important point.

So many of the road safety devices and initiatives that we have considered have 'negative side effects' that may well be bigger than the benefit.

I can't really see a downside either.

If its in the drivers view, as required to be a useful reminder  , could there be MOT line of sight issues.

Having only driven hired left hookers when abroad, by the time I've opened the passenger door, realised and walked around to the drivers side, and done the right hand handbrake and gear box thing I am pretty well sorted, some larger junctions take a moments consideration before proceeding.

Just a couple of thoughts, Not sure about the green tick and red cross, as in these days of box filling culture putting an X in a box is often an affirmative answer, and in the moment of greatest need (that moment of total blank/panic when you couldn't tell your own left from right) a driver may take a moment to take in the tick and X, could I suggest a simple green arrow as the main eyecatcher, the tick and X are great as a pre-start reminder, I just feel an arrow more effective in a moment of panic.

A great simple idea and as they say "if it saves one life" worth the price.

Thank you for your feed back. It was an initial thought to double side the sticker. Due to them being transparent the tick would appear backward. So Lane Check provides 2 stickers in a pack.

Good point! (ooops! )

As an aside, I'm always amused when leaving Abington services on the M74 in Central Scotland that there is a sign telling motorists to drive on the left! Quite what they'd have done if they hadn't twigged THAT far from the ferry ports is beyond me!

Anybody had to rely on a partner/passenger to report on the road ahead from the passenger seat? You need to know each other very well!!

I've driven LHD in the UK for a long time now and really must get around to fitting one - although I only have a serious problem a few times a year. One recently was a tractor/hedge cutter - he stopped to let queued cars past but even though I stopped way back the road curved gently and I had no chance of seeing past. After half a minute of me leaning and swearing he must have realised and waved me on.

edit: I like the idea, I have yet to drive on the right and having driven LHD cars I think I will need to be extremely careful. In fact I may well be driving in the US next month so I will probably order a pack.

Having had a Dutchman drive into and onto our wall at 2.00 am because he drove round the adjacent bend on the wrong side, and met an oncoming vehicle (no contact though) I can see that tiredness might be a factor after such a long drive from the ferryport, and leaving the motorway to services with no L/R bias may well be another.
Maybe it isn't as daft as it seems.

one of my colleagues fitted drilled a small hole in the left hand wing mirror cover and fitted a small camera behind (think maplin) and then wired it to his pda on the dash. geektastic.

I once got a lift in a LHD Lada 4x4, and the driver had rigged up two suction mounted rear view mirrors to the side glass behind the A-pillar.
You looked to the left hand one, to see a laterally correct view of the right hand one.
I can see how with modern mini cameras this could be done better and cheaply!

Oh! The Shame!............... cough! cough!

YES!.......My name is Draco and "I" have done this.......................

several times........................ :!: (luckily without incident)

OK, To be serious, in MY experience it is a problem. AND! easily done....
It's NOT when you first arrive when you do it, but later when you have become: "comfortable" about driving on the other side AND the road you are entering is EMPTY......

All I can say is, the MORE you drive over there, the MORE you get used to the "Mental Switch"..........

It Hasn't happened for quite some years now...........(fingers crossed) :)

Driving on the wrong side of the road when Overseas - Lane Check can help you correct yourself if you have that moment of doubt.

I remember the old joke about the guy who told his friend that he was going to France for his holiday and was taking his car. His friend told him to be careful as they drive on the other side of the road. The guy saw his friend again a week or so later and told him that, although still going to go to France, he would not be taking his car. "Why not?", his friend asked. "Well", said the first guy, "I thought about what you said about driving on the wrong side of the road, so I tried it from St. Albans to Watford. Christ, it's bloody dangerous!"

...or the old dear who is listenning to the radio waiting for her husband to come home and hears a newsflash that police are trying to close a section of the M6 because of a motorist driving the wrong way up one carriageway.

Realising that this is the stretch of motorway her husband will be using, she panics and phones him on his mobile to warn him of the rogue motorist.

He answers (presumably on his hands-free!) in a state of panic and says "it's not just one dear, there's hundreds of them"!

...I'll get me coat!
