In a similar vein...
I'm doing a little part time work with a friend that runs a bushcraft and survival school, to get publicity I've been doing firelighting demonstrations at militaria fairs, country fairs etc.
The local Blacks store run a tent show in the town centre, so I approached them about doing displays, once they understood what I was doing they were more than happy to have me there, but as it was on council property I would have to speak to the local council and get their permision. Initially they refused on health & safety grounds that providing a risk assessment and method statement for such a dangerous activity would be very hard.
No worries says me, I do H&S for a living.
U turn so quick it nearly broke something, now the reason given was that it would encourage kids to light fires in local parks.
Really, kids are already doing that with about 5l of petrol, they really can't be faffed to light a fire the way I would be demonstrating it - Bow Drill (rubbing two sticks together) cramp balls (a type of fungi) or silver birch bark.
Complete ban.
So I suggested doing some wood carving instead.
What would you be carving with?
The large stuff with an axe, the small stuff with a bushcraft knife.
No we can't have offensive weapons in a public place.
Not a problem, I've done this before and as long as I inform Essex Police a week before they are very accomodating (hell we've run bushcraft courses for some PCs and they know me by sight).
No response, they would not reply to me till after the tent show, stating that it was not something they wished to be associated with.
Idiots
