The cameras are part of Go Safe Wales's safety campaign and they are gradually replacing old "wet film" types in certain locations.
It reportedly means the cameras should always be active because data can be downloaded remotely.
A spokeswoman for Go Safe Wales. the Wales-wide road casualty reduction partnership, said: "In total 27 cameras are being replaced across Wales, of which six are in Swansea.
"The sites selected as suitable for upgrade are those that had the highest number of collisions and the greatest evidence of speeding.
"The other wet film cameras are not currently being replaced but remain in use. Digital cameras are assets of the relevant local authority; funded through specific funding to the partnership."
The spokeswoman added: "These will replace 'wet film cameras' which will eventually become obsolete.
"It has been shown in locations with static cameras and red light cameras that there has been a reduction in casualties by 72.25 per cent.
"The new technology will enable remote downloads and will reduce vandalism."
However, there are no current plans to replace cameras which catch drivers running red lights, although the technology can be used at traffic signals.
Meanwhile, throughout Road Safety Week, which started yesterday and is being backed by Swansea City FC, mobile speed cameras are being deployed — especially at night and where accidents have taken place in the past.
A slightly old story but one worthy of mention.
It seems a bit like old news too as many scams Country-wide are being replaced.
