Paul used to have a countdown idea .As more and more counties and areas self implode looking for camera funds and deciding to scrap cameras -thought the idea of a map ,perhaps green for those scrapping cameras ,orange for those toying with the idea and red for those that don't .
Appreciate that it would take mod time -and that's something they give freely ,but it could be a bit too much .

I have been contemplating something on this line ... even by a simple excel spreadsheet as we hear the news.
Wondered too about sending out an email to every Council - just need to collate all their email addresses !

Of course, as telling people who is doing what, is going to be helpful and additional to the facts. :)
We are not so silly as to assume that just because camera's have been turned off in many areas, that some plot to bring something else back in, or turn them back on, would not take place ! Also I have been quite sure that behind the scenes a lot of persuasive techniques are being implemented, to ensure that all those that are profiting from the 'Speed Camera Industry' are not going to loose out !

Not surprised, as they run Drive-tech.
Many people are greedy and quickly jump on the money train, it becomes hard to turn down a profit.

While we're adding columns to the spreadsheets, we could have ones for KSIs in that county in the three years before and three years after the switch off. Easy to suggest, I appreciate. Harder to do - what with not being as well financed and resourced as the scamera partnership propaganda machines!

The problem with before and after figures is that they don't tell us anything. They might go up, they might go down, they might stay the same.
The reason being, there's no mechanism by which the cameras being switched on or off can affect the figures. If the figures do change, call it coincidence, call it RTTM, call it blips, call it what you like, but don't say it has anything to do with cameras - not without some hitherto-undiscovered mechanism.

Looking at trend patterns is helpful over long periods of time against (honest) KSI facts (inc hospital data).
Plus if the physical camera remains in place then it is still effecting driver behaviour and so any data gathered.
This seems to be conveniently ignored by those taking the data and reporting on it.
As humans we adapt to new situations pretty quickly, but the overall effect that it may instil on us all is not always known.

This is quite an important point. How many of us would rely on press statements that, for example, Wiltshire had switched off their cameras and drive past a box on a pole without being distracted by it and perhaps driving at a modified speed. Would you take the chance?
