I was thinking about desire not to crash on the way home. It is partly self-preservation but a bit more as well (e.g. the economic consequences). I can't think of a better way to combine those two factors in a single term than self-interest.

However, there may be still more that's not covered by self-interest. I started to think about desire to please and desire not do wrong, and ended up with empathy and conscience.

I think self-interest definitely comes into the equation and either conscience or empathy - not sure which is better.

Would another good related term be pride, as in the pride a craftsman takes in doing a good job?

Ahh, now pride is interesting because it takes us into a so-far under-represented area... motivation.
