When existing road safety policy crumbles into dust and the history books, we're going to need to help in some serious rebuilding.

What short phrase would best describe and foster proper road safety?

I'm thinking around:

Skilled, responsible enjoyment and efficiency

(I know it's not there yet, but you get the idea.)

"better late than never" = "slow down" = "speed kills" = totally useless as shown by the last 15 years

Nice to see you back CO.

What's what got to do with congestion?
My initial thought reading Bombus' post was 'better early than late' :)

camera operator wrote:

Why can't it be both?

Your suggestion for a road safety motto was "better late than never". I interpreted that as "Stick to the speed limit even if you're running late, because it's better to get there late than not at all (due presumably to some hypothetical accident that would magically occur as soon as you exceeded the speed limit)".

Therefore it's hardly surprising that I mentioned speed. Perhaps I misunderstood you though, in which case I would be interested to know what you meant. Admittedly I was pretty much expecting a pro-camera/anti-speeding motto from you due to your username and past posts. Again, hardly surprising, but perhaps my assumption was wrong.

If you apply "better late than never" to going too fast, as opposed to exceeding the speed limit, then it makes sense, but it's redundant because it's effectively just saying "too fast is too fast and may result in an accident".

For what it's worth I quite like "Better late than never" - it equates to me to don't take risks.

Can I suggest now we move forward in what looks quite promising?

Not bad because it describes the Government's inevitable retreat from their obsession with camera based enforcement as the statistics prove it a waste of resources.

username - what you see is what you get, i cannot change it
past posts - water under the bridge as far as i am concerned, i stand by 98% of what i have said, even though not active any more

forget speed limits for the moment,

concentrate on this time management cycle that we live in

but how many times have you personaly planned a journey be it a a leisure trip, buisness trip, or work to a dedictated schedule such as a multi drop,

for whatever reason theres a delay, its then catch up, IMO the risk factor increases, the bad overtake, the frustration of the 40mph everywhere driver, the weather the road, when you arrive theres no parking another delay more catch up more stress etc etc,

well lets start with driver education - excellent idea (in theory), in practice will it work, you have adrenalin of youth, complacency of middle age, and over confidence of experience,

drive to the conditions not the posted limit - maybe for the advanced driver, but no one has ever stated what the numerical figure will be, as we all know there are some real idiots out there, would you seriously let loose your local chavs, taxi drivers to drive at whatever speed they want ?

* you have adrenalin of youth
This is a problem; however, our current policy won’t ever change that.

* over confidence of experience
I don’t believe experience breeds over-confidence. Experience tells you what you’re not good at and what your limits really are.

* complacency of middle age
I think I can’t comment on that as I don’t have the necessary frame of reference. Perhaps you could elaborate?

Of course not, I don’t believe anyone here ever has said that *
Quoting the SS manifesto:

Speed limit setting

Except in very specific circumstances such as deceptive hazards, speed limits must be set to follow firm clear national standards, and must be set in accordance with "85th percentile" principles.

This method would put a brake on the nuttier drivers whilst not needlessly criminalizing those who drive to the conditions.

* with the exception of motorways but I personally would be anxious of letting people go straight from zero to hero. A gradual increase, perhaps to 80 at certain times of the day, would be a good place to start.

At my daughter's recent graduation, the speaker refered to a t-shirt motto he had seen which he felt was relevent to the occasion. It amused me when I considered it in the context of Road Safety.

Know your limits - and then destroy them.

Use the roads like you make love; protect yourself, be kind and gentle and enjoy the occasional yea haa! :)

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

assuming you are relating to speed limits and not SCP worked sites( a totaly seperate issue), due to analysis the speed limit is set to the 85th percentile and signposted as such (without signposting how will the driver know the correct speed),

we now take a typical town, residential, retail and industrial areas all under current settings a blanket :30:, every road within the town is bound to flucuate with no doubt in some areas the 85th P being as high as 40mph, in others down to maybe 20mph (believe me i have reports), so we have 20 limits turning to 30's to 40's, IMO some drivers cannot understand a blanket 30

Well it isn’t the consensus of the forum users, let alone the campaigners.

I’m not sure I understood you here.
I hope you realise that for the setting of speed limits based on the 85th percentile rule, the speed measurements should be done with no speed limit in place.

IIRC, the Germans have many variable speed limits, dependent on the time of day, even through villages.
