For their first ten posts to the Safe Speed forums new users have an "L Plate" badge.

During the new user phase the following applies:
  • We'll show additional lattitude if the new user breaches forum rules.
  • Existing users should treat new users with greater than normal courtesy and always give the benefit of any doubt.
  • New user status should not be taken to imply anything other than new user status.
"New user status" and the L Plate are intended to help new users transition to becoming a valued contributor and member of the community. The L Plate does not deny you access to any features or facilities, rather it grants additional latitude and "temporary respect".

Paul,

Is there any reason you changed it from 20 posts to 10 posts? No reason for asking, just curious.

FWIW, I suspect that once a user has posted more posts than the threshold, the L-plate is removed from all that users posts (including the first ten). As soon as that happens, all indication that a post should be given more latitude etc. disappears, leaving the poster open to critisism etc.

Is this something that can be corrected?

It wasn't a "big decision" but I looked around and felt two things:

1) There were rather a lot of "L"s around when it was 20.
2) Some occasional posters were "well established" before 20 posts were reached.

No. The software does not have that option.

I don't really think I'd want it if it did, although I appreciate that it is possible for a busy new poster to create 11 posts between visits from regulars. Those regulars would then lose the benefit of the L plate.

I've noticed some threads that suddenly become active after days or even weeks of inactivity. Thus a post made weeks ago as a learner could suddenly come back to bite, particularly if the person responding joined after the OP.

That said, I don't think that it's too much of an issue - just something to bring to your attention.

Is it possible (or desirable for that matter) to remove a Learner's ability to start new threads?

I'm thinking of our friend "sensible majority" starting about ten threads, then buggering off.

Though I must admit, it was very amusing correcting the spelling...
