Just joined as I received an NIP this morning for speeding. The camera was on the opposite side of the road and therefore I was flashed in the front. I was unaware that a permanent camera could also be used for front and rear. Is this definitely correct? Thanks for any information. :(

Nope. It's all wrong. Are you sure it was a Gatso?

Thanks for your reply. I assume a gatso is the normal permanent yellow box that are sited all over the country. I also rang the no. given on the NIP and was told that some cameras are now able to do this!

Before you go on - look at this site - www.speedcam.co.uk and identify your camera.

Gatso - road marked with "Dragons tooth pattern" , camera no your side of road, gets picture of your rear plate.
Truvello --( usually has "truvelo " on post) , uses 3 lines on road , after grid) ( never seen a rear looking version, buut they do exist) gets picture of you/yout plate etc)

Despite the BBC picture the plans in Northamptonshire have nothing whatsoever to do with Gatsos. As far as I can tell, it's just one Truvelo at the moment, and so far I've been unable to obtain evidence that it is type approved.

Have just checked out the site and the camera is a Truvelco...which I'd never heard of til today, so it looks like I've been done. Until recently a gatso camera had been sited there for a couple of years, but was never operational, due I believe to several residents making a complaint about the siting of the camera, but thats obviously been resolved. I'd just overtaken a slow moving car at that particular point.

You baby eating monster - how dare you???!!

Truvello works from sensor strips under the road, and the simple expedient is to not go over them - by being on the wrong side of the road for example. Had you overtaken 50 to 100 yards later it wouldn't have been a problem!

The type approval regulations say that a camera can be capable of operating in front and rear modes, but not both at the same time. However, it's unclear to me whether that is an actual law, or if it is just a rule they are supposed to follow when granting type approval.

Do you have the photo?
You'll want to make sure the flash was magenta and not white. If it was not magenta then no evidence. :)

The type approval for the Truvelo Combi Smc which I read a while ago included front and rear facing modes, but it requires a filter for front facing mode. Unless you mean they are setting it up for front and rear facing at the same time. That's different of course. :)

Yes. That's the claim. As far as I can tell.

I've not quite worked it out. I have a feeling it's been reported deliberately obscurely, possibly to frighten motorcyclists into slowing down for the forward facing Truvelos. Maybe they're fed up of photos of biker + fingers up?
