After Pete317 yesterday highlighted a limitation in the Ashton Mackay graph for pedestrian fatality risk, I've been looking for better data.

I'm still looking, but I've found this:

http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/mpaine/speed.html

Contains:

"A similar relationship between initial travel speed and risk of fatality exists with cars hitting pedestrians, except that, in effect, the probability of a fatality reaches 100% at an impact speed of 60km/h (see "Vehicle Travel Speeds and the Incidence of Fatal Pedestrian Crashes" by
Anderson, McLean, Farmer, Lee and Brooks, J. Acc Anal. and Prev, Sept 1997)"

***

I note that the latest annoying "Think: slow down" TV ad makes the child fatality risk 20% at 30mph and 80% at 40mph. Where does that come from?

***

http://www.who.int/world-health-day/200 ... eed_en.pdf

contains:

***

I'll continue the search. Anyone got any alternative data or (access to?) full copies of the papers cited?

- clearly the same data as above, but the x scale of one copy is wrong.

The graph is attributed to: "'European Transport Safety Council' (ETSC), http://www.etsc.be"

http://www.hsrc.unc.edu/pdf/pedbike/99091.PDF

Contains:
"The main conclusion of the Zero Vision regarding pedestrian safety is that low motor vehicle
speeds at every encounter between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian must be assured. The
maximum speed is set to 30 km/h (19 mi/h). All available empirical evidence supports the
argument strongly: an impact speed of 55 km/h (31 mi/h) in a pedestrian accident is fatal with
almost 100 percent probability; while at an impact speed of 30 km/h (19 mi/h), the risk of being
killed is reduced to less than 10 percent (Pasanen, 1992)."

This large document contains some interesting snippets:
http://www.who.int/world-health-day/200 ... apter3.pdf

Contains:
• The probability of a pedestrian being killed rises
by a factor of eight as the impact speed of the car
increases from 30 km/h to 50 km/h ( 51).

Reference:

51. Ashton SJ, Mackay GM. Car design for pedestrian
injury minimisation. In: Proceedings of the Seventh
Experimental Safety of Vehicles Conference, Paris, 5–8 June
1979. Washington, DC, National Highway Traf-
fi c Safety Administration, 1979:630–640.

(That's NOT the usual A&M reference, although cleary it relates to the same work)

Also referenced:
49. Pasanen E. Ajonopeudet ja jalankulkijan turvallisuus
[Driving speeds and pedestrian safety]. Espoo, Teknillinen
korkeakoulu, Liikennetekniikka, 1991.

Loads of fascinating stuff in this document:

http://www.lrrb.org/pdf/200223.pdf

On Page 11 it is declared that Pasanan bsased his work on A&M data.

Three new graphs of fatality risk by age group of pedestrian are given.

I need to see a copy of this paper:

"Vehicle Travel Speeds and the Incidence of Fatal Pedestrian Crashes" by
Anderson, McLean, Farmer, Lee and Brooks, J. Acc Anal. and Prev, Sept 1997)"

Has anyone got access / a copy?

Paul

I pretty sure I have a copy on my computer at home. I'll check this evening and email it to you - if it's there.

I'm also working on something else which looks promising - I'll talk to you later.

Regards
Peter

This latest add is based on assumption, they do not have any figures to back it up.

Who determines whether a vehicle was traveling at 30 or 31 mph :?:

It is not possible :!:
