Just copied this from londonbikers.com - follows a discussion a few weeks back concerning the ownership of these cameras (TfL not LSCP?) and their consequent legality. Anyone heard any more on the subject?

New "undercover" Speed Cameras which were introduced a few weeks ago on the A12 are going 'live' on Monday!
We have had a tip-off from the BTST Locator update team that small 'specs' cameras have been sited both north and south of the Blackwall tunnel on the A12 in London.
The cameras have been sited in a deliberate speeding hotspot (because the limit reduces to 30 very suddenly without any advance warning) and the fine has been raised from the usual £60, to £100 per offence.
But here is the really unusual thing...
They have NOT installed signs warning drivers of this speed trap.
Why?
Because they are NOT be going to be hitting drivers with a licence endorsement as you would usually expect...

... They are just going to take our hard-earned cash instead!

This is just the latest case of blatant profiteering from the countries "safety camera" partnerships.
Our information tells us that these new cameras are going 'live' from Monday (12th February).
The speed limit for the tunnel is 30 mph northbound and 40 mph southbound.
If you already own a BTST Locator, then I strongly suggest you update it NOW before the cameras go live.

I don't know about the rest but the snippets above sound like a hoax

These sorts of reports are inevitably hoaxes, and it has all the usual signs of being one - no reference to news reports. Also there is no legal provision for fining £100 with no points.

edit: Also looks more like a publicity stunt from BTST!

I got this news in a spam mail I received, so I don't give it much credibility. It was from a company that offers those 'guaranteed to get you off your speeding/parking/death by dangerous driving charge for only £60' services, presumably they obtained my email and motoring interest from some motoring list or other I'm subscribed to. Taken together, the evidence doesn't make for a reliable source.

Nah it's a load of male cow excrement.

All speed cameras are type approved, this pretty much sets their size. SPECS cameras aren't all that small.
No points? Yeah. Right. It's a civil contract type thing then?

No warning of the speed limit change? No signs? So it's not enforceable?

Last time I read this (on another forum) they were 'already active'.
Then I got complained at for pointing out reasons why it was a load of nonsense and the thread got locked so I couldn't reply. I fully expect the same level of hate to be extended to me here.

We only deal with facts here :bighand:

I don't know if they are approved for evidence capture in the UK but Spike cameras are small.

Not sure about that bit; IIRC it means the SCPs can't net off if they don't abide by the rules.

BUT.......

This is set to change in 2 months: cameras anywhere without the need to net off.

Er... you're the fourth person to comment that it's a load of rubbish so I doubt it...

Interestingly, I believe somebody is fighting a tunnel case at the moment - Dartford? Apparently the speed limit is a bye-law, so there was some argument about whether the TSRGD applies because the speed limit isnt under the RTRA. I think the case is adjourned at the moment.

It will be interesting - previously if they made a mistake they could presumably get temp staff in to process the refunds while mainting the enforcement levels (and net off the extra costs), but now it would probably be more tricky because they have a fixed budget allocated by the LA, who will be very annoyed that their money is being wasted. (most LA's are desperately short of cash)

Seen them today. As you pass under the arch heading northbound. The specs are painted yellow but are slightly different in design to the specs you see on tower bridge or on lower thames st. On the exit of the tunnel they have installed them on the slip road but haven't completed the other ones yet, just the structure at minute

No the thread started was talking about the Low emison zone cameras but he was making out they were speed cameras.

The ones you have seen are SPECS going northbound only. Both north and south of the tunnel
