I've just had a notice of my speeding  I've filled it in as I know it was me but could you answer a few questions?

What fine/points will I get for doing 37 in a 30 limit?
Do I need to tell my insurance company when I get them or when I renew?

Sorry for the basic questions. Hope you can help.

K

Yes, you must inform your insurers or your cover could be invalidated.

Are you sure you were going 37mph?

If not fight it.

The notice says 37.

I felt that the road was a 40 limit and thats what I was driving to. I noticed the camera before it went off and checked my speed and was happy that I was under the limit (just). Apparently the road is known locally to be very deceptive in what you feel the speed limit *should* be and what it is. Thats no defence though, I know, but I am really annoyed with myself as I'm usually very careful about not speeding - 20 years and these are my first points :x

The real time to be annoyed with yourself is when something you do on the road causes a risk. The speed limit law is increasingly an ass and a distraction from safe driving.

It's also possible that you are not guilty of any offence, because very specific laws exist concerning speed limit signs, procedures, speed limit orders and so on. I would advise visiting http://www.pepipoo.com and see if you have a good legal defence.

Yes. When you renew is probably OK - but most won't increase your premium if it's the first "offence".

Direct Line is an exception. Expect a 20% hike in their case.

Thankyou for this. I've been beating myself up no end about it even though I know there is nothing I can do now. This is the important thing to remember.

Sadly, I'd tell them now - I got a real bollocking from our insurers some five or so years back when I told them about my wifes 3 points on renewal - "explain why you failed to notify etc"

Had to laugh really - the wife got 3 points for 37 mph on a wide and empty road leading off a dual carriageway from a camera hidden behind a tree.. She didn't see the funny side however...

What was nice was that the insurers deleted it from our record after four years (and told me so on the phone)
