Do any cars even have a belt driven fan any more?

Yes, but possibly more importantly, most cars have a belt driven water pump. (Don't they? I can't remember ever seeing a car engine that didn't have a belt driven water pump - but then my head isn't under bonnets much these days.)

At least the last 7 cars I have owned have had the water pump driven by the timing belt, and if that's slipping then you are in more trouble than a bit of overheating.

The last car I had with a belt driven fan was a Reliant Regal!

'Fraid so. The worst car I ever drove was a Maestro.

The boot was big, but had a well at the back - slightest bump and it was a right off.
My 2.0 ltr diesel had exceptional road holding - which was good, because once you got it up to speed, you didn't want to slacken off any! Otherwise the only other saving grace was it was easy to work on, and Montego bits fitted from the scrapyard!

I once took a learner driver over Wrynose in the snow with a view to teaching driving in poor conditions on steep hairpins.
Poor girl was traumatised by the time we reached the Duddon turn off - but not as much as the passengers in the back.
Passed her test first time though, and proved to be up to the task, just lacking confidence initially.
The trouble with Hardknott is nobody teaches you how to cope, you end up teaching yourself!

Really? So a water pump bearing failure might kill the whole engine? Are these French cars?

Vauxhall FWD engine units have had cambelt driven water pumps since c.1980! and yes, if the pump seizes it does indeed strip the teeth off the belt then set about destroying valves...

Fortunately it's pretty rare that this happens. Belt failure is generally due to scrimping on the service intervals for renewing them.

Same as the Ford CVH unit fitted since 1980 I have seen a water pump bearing failure throw a belt off....exit one set of inlet valves.

Yes, a knackered water pump bearing could easily cause a timing belt to fail in many cars but to be honest, the pumps usually leak long before there is enough play in the bearing to loose the belt - and make a noise. It's rare to find a water pump driven by the toothed side of the belt - most are driven on the flat side. If someone neglects their antifreeze on a car where the water pump is driven by the toother side - they don't usually do it a second time!

The Ford CVH uses the toothed side.

Vauxhall FWD engine units...

Of course! Front wheel drive, transverse engine. It's hard to lay things out properly when the engine is facing the wrong direction!

And since I've been avoiding front wheel drive like the plague, I've never come across it. :)

Indeed - but they're getting a bit thin on the ground now. It's a 20 year old design! I think they learned the hard way about the freezing problem!
