well if he was driving an old convertible then he was probably killed by the bonnet flipping over the windscreen.

Stopping asap might be a good idea. And hoping that my snapshot memory of the road ahead was a good one - dunno whether I'd risk even pulling over to the side, just get the hazards on.
Now a proper emegency stop in the hope the inertia slams the bonnet shut could be another option

Happened to my dad in an old Reliant Scimitar at about 70 - 80 in L3 once! I wasn't there but my brother was with him. One of the scariest things in my brother's life apparently! Fortunately, my dad was surprisingly cool about it (but he's always been a laid-back dude!) he just lifted off, put on left indicator and asked brother to keep an eye on the nearside until he got on to the hard shoulder.

Damned lucky though! Other than not panicking, he didn't feel there was any particular skill involved!

Happened to a friend & I about 22 years ago while we were in his company Granada doing around 65 ish in an NSL.
The noise it made when it happened was out of this world, but the sudden loss of forward vision didn't faze either of us in the slightest. He simply stuck his head out of the open window while I was looking through the gap between the bottom of the screen and the bonnet and we steered the car succusfully to the kerb & stopped.

The bonnet itself had ripped the hinges partially through the inner wings and bent itself over the top of the roof.
A 10mm spanner was then produced, said bonnet was removed, thrown in the boot, and we continued our journey.

As to what happened to your guy, that would all depend on whether he panicked or not.

Happened to me in an old Hillman about 30 years ago.
My window was closed so I couldn't stick my head out, so I just stood on the brake and hoped that my memory of the road ahead was accurate - it was.
One thing that sticks in my head is that, when it happened, it was like a parachute opening - it felt like I was already braking hard before my foot even got to the pedal.

Hmmn

Is it illegal to drive a car without a bonnet?

If you caught a pedestiran they could get chopped into kibbles!

The only thing I can think of is the Construction & Use Regulation 100 which is the "catch-all" that says (effectively) that nothing in or on the vehicle should constitute a danger to occupants or other road users. Can't think of anything "per se" that would make it illegal though - unless the screen washer jets were on the bonnet!
