Safe Speed issued the following PR via GPRS cellular at 11:37 this morning:

PR307: Drivers with speeding points aren't more dangerous says Safe Speed

news: for immediate release

Research commissioned by 8 midlands camera partnerships, published today,
claims that drivers with speeding points are more crash involved.

Safe speed points out that many insurance companies - working from
comprehensive data - disagree. They do not load the premiums of drivers with
speeding points.

That isn't the only problem with the claims.

- Although the claim is being made that there has been some correction for
'risk exposure' (obviously drivers who do higher mileages are more exposed to
the risk of crashes and more exposed to the risk of speeding convictions) we
have no confidence that the correction has been carried out properly. After
all, for an insurance company, you would think that speeding convictions would
function as an exposure proxy. Because of the greater exposure we DO expect
those with more convictions to be more crash involved. But if many insurance
companies are not even finding that effect, then it seems likely that mile for
mile, those with speeding convictions are LESS likely to be crash involved.

- If speeding convictions made drivers safer, then we should expect the
opposite effect to that claimed. Convicted drivers should have become safer. If
convicted drivers are more crash involved then clearly the system isn't working
to make the roads safer.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "I believe that this research is nonsense,
strongly influenced by pre-conceptions and vested interests. Speed cameras do
not identify risky drivers nor do they make our roads safer."

"It's junk science, and junk science makes our roads more dangerous because it
tends to cause life-saving resources to be misallocated. This is the
fundamental reason that speed cameras have proved to be a road safety disaster.
Everyone - drivers, police, highways authorities and many road safety groups -
are expending resources on the wrong safety factor. Had those same resources
been allocated efficiently, we would now be down to around 2,000 road deaths
per year. We're over 1,000 lives a year behind schedule and I am certain that
speed cameras are at the centre of the problem."

"Our speed cameras are all in the wrong places - they should be in the scrap
yard."

<ends>

The only thing this study proves is that those dozy enough to be caught speeding are more likely to have accidents. I bet those that speed and have clean licences have much fewer accidents than those that speed just as much but get caught.

Observation, observation, observation

A strange statistic that came out recently was that girls get caught by fixed cameras and boys by mobile cameras.

My friend who got caught by two gatsos also failed to notice that the nice streight road she was on was not a duel carriageway and wrote her car off. (and is facing prosicution)

Personally I have only been caught by sneaky mobile traps. (Oh and they were very sneaky)

Guess where he says this?

Looks like they chose a car hating prof to do the study. Garanteed to give them the crap they need.

So where has this study been published?

Has it been peer-reviewed?

I'd like to have a close look at it - to call it "independent" considering the background of the lead researcher and the source of the funding seems at best questionable. I'd like to examine the methodology used.

This sort of thing is starting to dent the credibility of academic research.

With no less the 8 SCPs paying for the study I be the conversation went somethign like this....

SCPs. "Well Prof we want to pay you loads of money to do a survey on speed cameras and accident rates"

Prof "Certainly, what conclusion would you like."

Anyhow the report was done last October. How come it took 6 months for them to release the results....http://www.srsc.org.uk/files/stevestradling.pdf

Maybe the SCPs were skanked into paying for something that already existed....

another angle - the scameraships own research shows that cameras aren't working.

clearly those convicted should become safer drivers if cameras worked. their own research shows that they have no effect.

anyone seen the survey questions?

Just a thought but perhaps those with points on their license are so much more on edge about being pinged again, (as they're getting closer to a ban) that they spend much more time looking out for talivans and other camers, hence giving less attention to the road and therefore are more likely to have an accident.

NO-Can imagine them though --"Mr Jones -cameras slow drivers - with all the children playing in the street , do you think it is a good idea to slow drivers"

Mind you - west mids are having a tough time with their surveys --
http://www.wmsafetycameras.co.uk/survey.php

Everybody keeps on saying "NON!

Again there's a subtle backdown from 1/3 are caused by speed -

no it's "suggest that excessive speed contributes to more than "

next week --??

Paul - any analysis of their new fav Road safety research 43?
