I don't understand this at all.

Suppose I speed towards a Gatso on my bike. It sees me, front on, exceeding the limit, flashes and takes a pic. Pic doesn't show the registration. What does it do then? Take a picture a random number of seconds later at the point I might be passing if my speed remains constant? Where's the continuity of evidence? What if I slow down after setting it off the first time? If they have 2 pics from cameras facing in opposite directions how do they prove that it's the same bike?

This makes no sense. :?

So it's not the hi-tech solution they're suggesting it is then; it's actually just 2 Gatsos back to back?

The caption under the photo says “Modified cameras can take pictures from front or rear” so doesn’t seem like two are used.


I thought all Gatsos were approved for rear facing photo so they can capture a bike’s VRM anyway?

They are Truvelo cameras and they are going to be used in rear facing mode.

Problems with the flash blinding drivers and causing crashes perhaps?

I love the observation they make that motorcycles "tend to" only have a rear numberplate.

These people are so unused to handling an actual real life fact that when one comes along they can't resist wrapping it in weasel words...

...allegedly. :lol:

I thought of that but us lucky Pompey people already have a Truvelo which can, and has, been swung around to enforce from the rear. That cam has been there for well over a year (A2030). Is this another case of slack reporting?

The one in the report: I have no idea, doesn't make any sense to me at all.

That Truvelo in Portsmouth: has been set up on the divider between lanes (single carriageway) and can seemingly be set up to enforce for one of: northbound from rear, northbound from front, southbound from front or southbound from rear (I have seen the cam setup for 3 of these combinations). There are 4 sets of pressure sensors placed appropriately, each accompanied with the relevant gatso or truvelo style road markings. The camera arm is adjustable so the cam can get a clear shot of any one of the sensors/markings. I can get a pic of the setup if anyone really wants it. I don’t know if the cam has actually been live in these 4 combinations but I also don’t know of any rule which prohibits this.

Northampton have many Truvelos, this is either them fitting new piezo strips so the cameras can be swung around (as smeggy says, like Hampshire do) or fitting secondary cameras which take a photo of the rear of the vehicle. Presumably this could either be fitted to the camera housing facing forward and fire after a short delay, or a separate unit placed some distance in front of the Truvelo itself.

If you're right, how long before they try to charge you for 2 offences, one for each camera?

Under the "old" rules this could not happen. You cannot get two fines in the same enforcement zone. I caught the CSCP out on this one when the issued a bogus press release about getting double fines when the used two cameras in the same zone. It was a creat thread on their now defunct message board.

The rules may have changed now though.

It wasn't a 'rule' (because, as we know, the safety partnerships' rules have no legal basis, they are simply a set of hoops they have to jump through in order to get their cash back!)

It was a legal precedent established by case law. You'd need to trawl the decisions since to see if it has since been modified/overturned.

The Truvelo's just north west of Basingstoke on the A339 operate in foward or rear facing mode, they switch between them regularly.

Th ere is a Gatso in southend that is in a 40 section just before a 70 limit and catches a lot of drivers speeding up in anticipation, vandals have turned the head 90 degrees.

Surley this modification means that it is no longer type approved ??? :twisted:

Just found this (it wipes out the Truvelo theory)

I’ve sniffed around the Gasto site; it would appear they actually do supply a digital camera with infra-red flash.

I know it is illegal to alter a VRM to make it unreadable to any enforcement camera, but AFAIK it’s entirely legal to apply an IR filter to your windscreen to help stop you getting so hot from the sun’s rays........ :evil:
