If anyone knows the junction of the A591 into Windermere, or has negotiated this on a bike, you will know that to take your hand off the bars to signal, or to look over your shoulder is dangerous, and likely to result in serious injury.
It's down hill, with a long sweeping lefthand lead into the road, AND to make matters worse, the entrance to Windermere Station, is off the junction on the left - which tempts oncoming drivers to scoot through gaps in traffic straight into the station approach.
Finally the Tourist Information Centre is on the far corner of the Station approach, and is frequented by drivers more interested in where they are going to stay that night, than in any cyclist approaching from their right!
The way a cyclist approaches this junction is a true test of whether they have common sense, or are simply thrillseekers with no fear of death!
In my opinion, there is no right way to approach safely, as every occasion depends on the actions of the various other participants.
All are at risk of a collision - but the cyclist is the one risking serious injury, and few car drivers take this into account.
I still feel that many cyclists are untrained nowadays, and should be made to take their part, or at least be tested to ensure a level of necessary competance.
