I’ve not had this before so I’m not sure where I stand. I gave a company permission to debit my credit card over the telephone, the amount was £17.99. When I checked my bank statement I notice they had debited my card to the amount of 48.57, as this was not discussed over the phone I don’t know what the addition is for and I see it as irrelevant when I only gave permission for them to deduct the £17.99.

Unless they have made a mistake I see this as theft. I’ve written to the company asking for the excess money back and also said I will be speaking to my bank at the first opportunity.

As this was paid on my Credit Card can the bank do anything about it?

Or anyone got any advice?

On the face of it your interpretation seems to be correct, unless there are any prior circumstances where you could have agreed to having your card charged (any signed forms or anything).

You should talk to the firm who debited the money first, but if they are not playing ball, ring your credit card company and they will usually grab back the full amount.

You can also do this with direct debits. Handy when your mortgage company continue to grab your mortgage even when you have moved to another company :banghead:

1. Put the payment in to dispute.

2, It is theft

3. Report it at your local police station.
It is an act of theft, and don't take any bollocks from the numpty on the desk otherwise.

That's the long & short of it according to law.

You should also insist on itemised invoice as well to come under separate cover to goods.

Speak to card company und arrange for payment to go into their limbo until resolved und refunded.

I do not use a credit card Liebchen - nor do I give any card details over phone.

Speaking as a retailer it sounds very much to me like a mistake. If you know the company then talk to them but they may not actually know anything about it. Believe it or not mistakes do happen in the banking World.

The first thing to do after that is contact the credit card company they have procedures in place to help you.

It would be extremely unlikely that the retailer is trying to steal your money unless you are dealing with a very dodgy company and you wouldn't have given them your card number would you?

I can understand VAT and delivery not being taken into account but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’ve written to the company involved and I’m off to the bank this morning (first chance I’ve had due to Christmas). I’ll let you all know the outcome. :)

Ring the credit card company immediately and have the transaction put in dispute. This means you do not have to pay it until the matter is resolved.

Don't bother going to the bank/branch. The staff there are likey not to be trained in CC disputes, they could make matters worse. Ring the helpline on your statement.

They will probably tell you to contact the retailer, which you have done anyway.

Homer,

Thanks but you were late, you were right though, I had to ring the credit card company and they asked for a copy of the letter I wrote to the company concerned. They told me to wait for a reply before they could do anything. They also said that they can do something about it, if I don’t get a reply I am happy with.

Cheers
Dixie
