On Radio Cumbria today, and on Radio 2, news that Cumbria Safety Cameras were unable to identify 150 vehicles which were traveling at 70mph through a contra flow on the M6 near Tebay.
It would appear that FOG was so thick, that the lights of the vehicles rendered the camera useless.

In addition, they were also unable to do anything about the large numbers of vehicles driving in fog with NO lights on at all in the Windermere area :x

Maybe they should have asked for assistance from the Police, who could have stopped them for a closer look!!

£9000 loss for the CSCP, AND the guilty drivers would have been speeding at the next roadworks, and the next etc. until they received their NIP in the post!! HOW SAFE IS THAT!!

Went past there last night each way going from Blackpool to Carlise and back. Tebay area was one of the heavier fogged sections - 70 would have definatly been above my top speed even if no roadworks, 50 in the road works would have been pushing it.

If I'm right this section of roadworks has 2 cameras (one each way), the same type as at Ings - with the much smaller camera box.

Something I noticed last week when I came back though there in the dark, was that they must be using a new type of yellow reflective paint - it doesn't reflect!!! I would have had no idea I had passed a camera if my Sat Nav hadn't given the warning on approach to it.

Meanwhile, the thick fog which has accompanied wintry conditions in some areas has prevented drivers on the M6 in Cumbria from being caught by speed cameras.

The county's safety camera partnership has reported that more than 150 vehicles were caught travelling at 70mph on Tuesday night in a section of contraflow near Tebay, where the temporary limit is 50mph.

However, the fog was so heavy that the cameras failed to even make out the shape of some of them

So they don't work in fog, be interesting to see how they fare in snow - especially when the kids start using them as targets. Thinking of that - vans are usually a target for the snowballers - will we see the talivans given the same treatment?

Kevin was on Radio Cumbria tonight explaining that the light flared in front of the lens!!
If 150 vehicles passed by without getting the tickets, then the CSCP is £9000 out of pocket! Maybe they were hoping the story would encourage motorists to feel sorry, and give themselves up.

Of course if more cars had LED's on the front, a bit of detective work with a tape measure could match a few of them to the picture - as long as the flash did'nt go off!!

So, could the 'light flare in front of the lens' when there is no fog with powerful xenon spotlights? Would this lead to an 'error' code or just the possibility of an inaccurate reading?
'Light flare in front of the lens' - but I thought they said they were infallible.

hmm, is all that saying that it was the "wrong sort of fog"??( i.e. the dense ,as in thick sort.)

So as i see it , score stands at 2 -1 to the railways - they've got the leave problem and the "wrong sort of snow", and roads have "the wrong sort of fog"

I think it was just the usual problem - when it's foggy, and the lights are on full you cannot see for the glare in front of the vehicle.

Also happens to SCP - the air is foggy at moment and lights are full on so they cannot see .( or are the lights on and everybody's happy in the back seat, or down the pub  )

One thing thats got me is if they know x number of drivers were speeding then why can't they identify them. I don't believe they can confirm these cars were speeding as they can't be identifed between two points.

There are alot of blue mondeos on the road!

Radar or laser are not affected by fog, visual photography is.

It cant have been much fun for the road workers, working in thick fog, with dangerous drivers speeding past, and knowing that the only thing protecting you was a photograph of the vehicle which ran you down..........

Which is why they call them "SAFETY" cameras (except the signs on the road say SPEED cameras).

More like a photograph of the shape of a vehicle .These cameras , are they same as "enforcement" cameras ?
