Did you know,

Did you know...
In Penrith town, there are four distinct time periods for fatal and serious injury accidents – 9-10am, 12noon and 2pm, 4-6pm and 7-9pm

You cannot say the CSCP site is not informative. Make a note of these times - it might be advisable to avoid Penrith at these times, it might even save your life!!
6.00 pm until 7.00 pm... I think that's when most people are having their dinner!

Oh, and it's the 1st of October, and the August figures for KSI's are not even posted up yet! The real JJ must be on holiday.

Edited to add appropriate title! :)

I thought most were in the early hours. It is why they justify cameras working at 4 in the morning... :?

These are their "snippets" of useful information:

In Penrith town, there are four distinct time periods for fatal and serious injury accidents – 9-10am, 12noon and 2pm, 4-6pm and 7-9pm

The A686 between Penrith and Alston had more accidents over the past three years than any other road in the area

Almost all accidents occur while vehicles were travelling straight ahead although turning right and overtaking also featured in the causation records

Most fatal and serious injury accidents in the Kendal rural area occur between 12 noon and 5pm

In common with other areas, most fatal and serious injury accidents occurred in fine, dry weather and on 30mph roads

Virtually all fatal and serious injury accidents in the South Lakes area occurred in fine, dry weather and in daylight

The majority of fatal and serious injury accidents occur in fine, dry weather without high winds and on 60mph national speed limit roads

In town almost all fatal and serious injury accidents occurred on 30mph roads

Most accidents occur on A class and unclassified roads and in fine, dry weather and day light

In Kendal town, there are three distinct time peaks for accidents – between 7am and 9am, between 12 noon and 1pm and between 3pm and 5pm.
Most fatal and serious injury accidents in the Penrith rural area occur between 12noon and 5pm

In 2004 there was a 67 per cent reduction in people killed and seriously injured at the hotspots monitored by CSC Which most likely would have happened anyway! In the meantime, FATALS went up elsewhere!!

In the Barrow area, most accidents occur at times when people are driving to or from work

So there you have it - the CSCP contribution to improving safety on our roads. If you'd like more examples of the contradictory messages on their website, just ask, I have LOTS more!!

AND dont forget, steer clear of kendal or Penrith between 9-10am, 12noon and 2pm, 4-6pm and 7-9pm, and avoid fine, dry weather and on 30mph roads and fine, dry weather without high winds and on 60mph national speed limit roads, in case you meet an out of control statistician!

Earnest,

Looks like we’ll all have to start getting weather forecasts before we plan any trips to Lakes. And to stay away when it’s dry, well!!

Amateurs! Our local partnership managed to get a 76% reduction in Smithfield Street Shrewsbury merely by thinking about putting a camera there! :-)

ACTUALLY, it states there was a reduction - it does NOT claim that the fall was due to the presence of SPEED cameras. However that is heavily implied - most of the public would not see the difference. :(

these are odd hours.

most accidents are between 8-9 am and 4-5pm.. ie rush hour.. now there is a surpise...

clearly in your area, there is a difference... it's the holiday makers..
gettin out of bed and getting going 9-10

jumping in the car for lunch 12-2 pm

going back to their hotel 4-6 (and rush hour) ..

going to dinner.. 7-9pm.

My guess is holiday makers out number locals by a big number.,.

bill

Yet another disaster for a family this week.
Quote:
Michelle Taylor, from Greystoke, died when the car in which she was passenger left the road and ended up on a forested verge.

The statistics tell us that young people are dying more than older people.
The CSCP website news wrote:
Friday 12 August, 2005
Almost Half Of All Fatals Involve Young Drivers
Cumbria’s problems with young drivers and their passengers dying or being seriously injured while driving on the county’s roads have been highlighted by figures released by Cumbria Safety Cameras.

Between August 1 2004 and July 31 this year, at least one driver between the ages of 16 and 25 were involved in 22 fatal collisions (48% of all recorded fatal collisions) and 101 serious injury accidents (33 per cent of all serious injury collisions).

The statistics tell us speed cameras however catch more middle aged drivers. In doing so, they bring in a great deal of revenue, which is spent on what?
SPEED CAMERAS, a Safety Camera Partnership Manager, publicity officer, a statistician, and some talivans and drivers.
They push out a few leaflets with messages of dubious effectiveness, and run a website which displays the pointless statistics we have read in my earlier post.

The CSCP website statistician wrote:
Most fatal and serious injury accidents in the Penrith rural area occur between 12noon and 5pm

so I guess that this most recent accident bucks the trend....
Quote:
The accident happened at Storch New Bridge between Greystoke and Penrith on Wednesday evening.

In the words of Bing Crosby's song,
Quote:
WE'RE BUSY DOING NOTHING, WORKING THE WHOLE DAY THROUGH
TRYING TO FIND LOTS OF THINGS NOT TO DO

So, I looked on the Cumbria Safety Camera Partnership website for a link appropriate to a family who might have suffered a loss, and in the LINKS section I found..... a list of other Camera Partnership websites, a link to Safer Roads for Cumbria, and links to Speed Camera manufacturers websites!!

No link to BRAKE, or ROADPEACE, or the Samaritans.
At the end of their top driving tips is this..
Quote:
Much of this advice is given on the AA web site and we acknowledge any copyright.

So there you have it, an investment of over £1 million pounds and we have rising fatalities, and driving tips you can go and get from the horses mouth (the AA website) and a whole bunch of pointless statistics.

Had a look at that site - think a Mac enroe phrase sums it up quite nicely-
the one he used to use to umpires

Monday morning, in driving rain and spray, soon after 9.00 am, an accident occured on the A591 just outside of Staveley, just a short distance from the Cameras at Ings.
Conditions were so bad, I had telephoned Radio Cumbria to report the standing water and the fact several motorists were driving without ANY lights.
In addition, drivers were swerving out around puddles in the road, without taking into consideration oncoming vehicles.
It wasn't 12 noon, fine, dry, OR a 30 mph road, so I felt quite safe....

Actually, the cause of this accident, which led to my wife being held up for 45 minutes appears to have been a driver who had missed a turning, doing a U-turn on a busy commuter route, under conditions where visibility was appalling! If only he had waited a couple of minutes until he got to Ings, he would have been caught on camera....
Oh, they only do speeding photos, not stupid behaviour!! :(

Another statistic for the CSCP to play with while they fail to address the FATAL accident statistics.

Does Bowness count as Kendal rural area?

A young lady on her way to work on Wednesday met an untimely death, after leaving the road and striking a tree in front of a wall.
8.30 am, no other vehicles apparently involved.

Quote:

This was a wet and windy day, and was within the 30 mph limit.
I have since heard mention that there were leaves on the road - but I saw no evidence of this - not at the scene at least.

Another terrible statistic for the partnership to play with...

Q38 Surely when the roads are quiet at night and traffic is light the roads are safer, so surely it is unfair to prosecute people for speeding then ?

The accident rate doubles at night, particularly late in the evening and in the early hours. This is due to higher vehicle speed, because there is less traffic, more alcohol consumption, tiredness and reduced visibility. Respect for speed limits is just as important at night, if not more so.

A bob each way then.
