So it's clear that doing away with cars isn't a safety option. If doing away with cars isn't a safety option, does it automatically follow that doing away with 10% of cars isn't a safety option? 1% of cars?

(OK. I know that 'they' will talk of 'safer forms of public transport' - that's why we're in brainstorming.)

Now take it one stage further and compare the potential safety benefits of improving road safety (through proper policies of course) against the potential safety benefits of 'modal shift'. We've got them banged to rights again surely?

It would be a safety option of doing away with some cars. Like the dangerous ones e.g. ones that move.

The safest form of transport is flying (or so we are told).

I don't think it would stay that way if everyone swapped the car for the plane.

Another thought.

After the slight reduction in traffic levels when the London congestion charge was introduced didn't the roads become more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians?

Yes, but the dangers of flying are mostly associated with take-off and landing. It is relatively safe because the distances are usually very great. If the average flight was five miles, rather than several hundred, the risk per mile would be greatly increased.

I've argued on here before that there is a kind of "critical mass" effect of growing car ownership and usage. If you by some means halved the number of cars, and converted millions of people to non-drivers, I firmly believe that more people would die on the roads overall - even if the average driver quality was thereby increased. In the 1950s we were killing twice as many people with one-tenth the number of cars.

I gather there was a large surge in the number of moped and cyclist accidents which was put down to a lot of inexperienced riders avoiding the charge by switching to two wheels.
