Drivers could face more speed cameras as accident blackspot recorder goes live
MOTORISTS could face more speed cameras following the launch today of a new accident recording system.

Speed camera GETTY

Speed cameras in the UK are set to get a new accident recording system

The Collision Recording and Sharing (Crash) system is set to help police gather data on all road collisions across England and Wales.
It will be used to identify accident blackspots to let the authorities make the roads safer.
But motoring organisations warned that this is likely to lead to more speed cameras when often the best solution would be to redesign the road.

Local councils often cannot afford to re-engineer roads so instead plump for cameras, which pay for themselves through fines.

An AA spokesman said: “The speed camera rules are that they should be sited in accident blackspots but the concern for many motorists is that they are put up in areas with no real record of accidents.
“This system would probably help justify them being put up and hopefully older cameras could be moved from other sites to the blackspots.
“But speed cameras are not the be all and end all of preventing accidents.
“Engineering the road to remove hazards such as dips, difficult junctions or sharp bends can often deal with accident blackspots.”
He added: “This system also raises the possibility of councils being sued if they do not take action to improve a blackspot and someone has an accident.”

RAC Foundation director, Professor Stephen Glaister, said: “This brings accident recording into the 21st Century and means less pen pushing and time wasted for police officers.
“But just as data collection is becoming more sophisticated so should the response to the findings be.

The speed camera rules are that they should be sited in accident blackspots but the concern for many motorists is that they are put up in areas with no real record of accidents.

AA spokesman
“Most drivers actually support the use of speed cameras but long gone are the days when the devices were the only weapons in the road safety arsenal.
“Today crash prevention is as much about controlling the road environment and the vehicle as the driver.”

The computer team behind the Crash system, IPL, said police will be able to send data via a phone app.
An IPL spokesman said Crash will save police forces time when logging collisions and improve the accuracy of the information collected at the accident scene.
Crash pulls in data from other official systems, such as vehicle and registered keeper information from the DVLA, via the

Police National Computer system.
The police officer will now only need the registration plate whereas before he may have also needed to fill in the make, model, colour, owner’s details and more.
The system also makes it easier to pinpoint collision locations.
IPL Services Director Simon Catley said: “As well as saving police time and the taxpayer money, Crash will help the Department for Transport and local councils build a safer road network, which will benefit everyone in the country.
“None of this would be possible without high-quality information, so making it as easy as possible for officers to log collisions accurately was crucial.”

There are so many points in this that are wrong .... it shows how utterly corrupt this entire system is tragically becoming. Really sad because it will be the public who will die due to a totally failed policy of road safety. :(

Yes, I agree that there is a lot wrong with this.

"The speed camera rules are that they should be sited in accident blackspots..."

Are these really the "rules"? How does this square with the use of cameras on motorways which are by far the safest roads per vehicle mile? Why are mobile cameras used on roads where there have been no accidents for years and years but the limit has been recently reduced?

Call me a cynic if you like but could the answer start with an M and finish with a Y?

It's disturbing that the RAC think that this is best to help save the police from pen pushing ! The police need to be out there sorting out the traffic and policing proportionally and fairly.
There isn't some simple solution to this. It's hard graft and what's best must always be encouraged !

This really is a sad excuse for a forum.
While there is only one post every fortnight or perhaps even fewer when there is a post a member who has been here years seems to know nothing about the main system it campaigns against.
There have been no rules for the use of safety cameras since 31 March 2007. Even when DfT rules were in force nothing within those rules prevented the police and highways authorities from m using speed cameras anywhere they wanted to. Not only that but they don't need to take any heed of the number of collisions or casualties before enforcing the speed limit....and still do not.
If they wanted to claim the costs back they did but as the government contribute nothing to costs there is no reclaim and hasn't been since 2007 so there are no rules. I do hope that is quite clear enough for you.
If you haven't grasped this by now perhaps the forum can be considered defunct.

You may have incorrectly understood my comments. This is a quote from the above article:

"An AA spokesman said: “The speed camera rules are that they should be sited in accident blackspots..."

My point is, as you say, this is wrong. I know this and you know it too.

My next points are also valid. Is there any real safety value in using camera enforcement on motorways when there are far more dangerous areas to improve? The purpose is to promote safety not to catch people driving responsibly just over a recently reduced limit.

More like, the so called road safety "experts" and their professional witnesses, are more concerned with protecting the money stream .
I live in what one barrister ,trying to defend a family from hell, described as "a deprived area". What became apparent as our efforts struck home on the yobs ,was the lengths the yobs went to to frighten us to stop our clean up campaign.
Something rings a lot of bells when we see multiple posts from Neptune's mate, (Cap't pugwash) trying to rubbish this site.
Then again ,if the good Cap'tn hasn't seen it- with the road safety figures showing road safety in decline, then perhaps the SCP single approach to speed as the SOLE reason for poor road safety might now be seen as DEFUNCT.

I noticed recently , when he was challenged and found wanting on PH ,that he'd desist( honest promise- and it shows his honesty  ). SADLY ,he just chanfgrd his username and resurfaced ( as all submariners do ), to post more tripe), (from the mouths of brainless bovine s) on the effects of speed on road safety. NOT an AD HOMINIE comment, but an observation based on true observation. - come on GS/ PHB( or any one of your psuedo names, banned under SS rules) - surface and lets have your explanation.
