Top 10 speed camera traps in Hull and East Riding revealed

By Hull Daily Mail By Danny Longhorn Posted: October 07, 2014

THE top ten speed camera traps across Hull and East Riding have been revealed by road safety campaigners.
In total the cameras have snapped 17,612 speeders and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds in fines.

And the region's busiest catches nine people every day and has raked in more than £238,000 in a year.
The speed camera in Stoneferry Road, east Hull, is also the biggest cash-generator in the region.
The camera caught 3,284 people speeding along the 30mph road last year.
It was revealed as the speeding ticket hot spot in Hull and the East Riding in an annual report produced by Safer Roads Humber, which operates the cameras.

In the East Riding, most drivers were caught speeding on the A614 at Holme on Spalding Moor. It earned more than £192,000 after capturing 2,359 speeding motorists in 2013.

Ruth Gore, spokeswoman for Safer Roads Humber, said: “Speeding is still seen by some people as socially acceptable.
“Like drink driving, speeding should be seen as socially unacceptable, but we are still catching people.”
Across the Safer Roads Humber area, which also includes North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire, the overall number of offences increased during 2013.
The rise was blamed on the Peaks Parkway average speed camera system in Grimsby going live in October 2013.

In August 2013, the fixed penalty fine issued to speeding drivers increased from £60 to £100.

Overall, 14,592 tickets were paid to Safer Roads Humber, which resulted in £1,084,920 revenue being collected by the Government.

More than 26,400 people paid £95 to attend a speed awareness course, netting £2,514,650 for Safer Roads Humber.

Ms Gore said this cash is used to cover the partnership’s operational costs, with any surplus going towards a wide range of road safety projects.
She said: “The sites cameras are located are sites where people have been killed or injured and the cameras are out there enforcing these figures come down.
“The faster you go, the harder you hit and the less thinking time you have should something happen.”
Last year, 57 per cent of motorists caught speeding went on the speed awareness course.

Ms Gore said: “Speed awareness courses are offered to drivers exceeding the speed between 10 per cent of the speed limit plus 2mph to 9mph.
“So for example in a 30mph zone they are offered at 35mph to 42mph if they haven’t been on a course within the last three years.
“The impact of the speed awareness course is still being evaluated nationally, but from what we’ve seen it does lead to people thinking about how they drive generally and people report driving differently afterwards.
“The feedback is very positive.”

During 2013, Safer Roads Humber enforced at 69 core safety camera sites.

Of those, 60 were mobile sites, which are visited by camera vans, five were fixed camera sites and four were routes.

Last year, almost 200 motorcyclists were prosecuted for speeding during the police campaign Operation Achilles, which aims to reduce the number of bikers being killed or injured.
Of those motorcyclists prosecuted, 45 per cent were travelling at more than 85mph.

This year the police used an unmarked motorcycle to catch speeding bikers on the East Riding’s roads.

PC Simon Carlisle, casualty reduction officer for the East Riding, said: “The summer of 2013 brought with it some very warm and dry weather, which was perfect for a day out on a motorcycle.
“It is pleasing to see that, even with all of the good weather, we had less than 200 prosecutions.
“This shows the message is getting out to people and we are targeting the correct areas.”

THE top ten places in Hull and the East Riding where drivers were caught speeding in 2013:
• A1165 Stoneferry Road, Hull – 3,284 drivers.
• A614 at Holme On Spalding Moor – 2,539.
• A63 Daltry Street flyover, Hull – 2,287.

I have been on air on Tuesday with BBC TV Hull for their News programs for Wednesday air-time.
I only had a minute or two and there is always so very much to say in such short time-spans it is very hard to get much across. But I did my best. :)
