<Meldrew voice mode> I don't believe it </voice mode>

They claim that if they turn the shoulder into a live lane that, no matter which lane a car breaks down in, they can play with signs to make that lane a no fly zone. WTF?? This indeed should be safer for the (extremely small) percent who break down without warning in a live lane. But what about the other (much larger) percent who sense that there is something awry and make their way to the slow lane to take stock and get on to the shoulder when they feel the inevitable? For this silent large majority of breakdowns, matters are now far worse. No matter where they pull to they are going to be stopped in a live lane.

Cloud cuckoo land.

errr.... you pull onto the hard shoulder to take stock and then pull into one of the regular emergency refuges ?

Nice one Ed, BUT a few years ago I had problems on the M40. I'd lost drive in L2. Traffic was light and I managed to coast to the hard shoulder. But with no drive, HOW do you pull into one of those nice "emergency refuges".And till a vehicle in trouble contacts motorway control ,the vehicle is in greater danger than before hard shoulder running.

Keep coasting... put your hazards on and pray.

To be fair i've never encountered a broken down vehicle on the hard shoulder of the m42 when it is live, they or "it" seems to spot pretty quickly and close the lane. Otherwise I expect we'd have heard of ALOT of incidents of stranded vehicles getting rear ended.

Ed

Are you saying that the M42 already has the hard shoulder converted to a live lane with overhead signs to depict breakdowns?
