This is a review of roads in Hampshire with higher than expected accident rates. You will notice that the survey is all about speed reduction and not about looking at the real causation or engineering measures to reduce hazards.

For the sake of brevity, I will give just one typical comment on the locations highlighted:

- The A326 along the Waterside between the Dibden Manor and Hardley roundabouts, a stretch which has seen 56 crashes in the past five years.

This road is a fast very busy single carriageway A class road. The real problem is that you can turn right onto the main road from side streets and you are allowed to turn right off the main road across oncoming traffic. As the stretch in question is between two roundabouts all you need to do is allow left turns only and use the roundabouts to facilitate this. However, it seems easier to put up a few speed limit signs which will make no difference.

I did look for the speed limit increase recommendations in the review but, guess what?

We had a similar case in Telford. The majority of the crashes were at a right turn just before the brow of a hill. They dropped the limit from 60 to 40MPH AND made it no right turn, so that you have to go round the higher roundabout (only a couple of hundred yards away). I pointed out to them that the speed limit wasn't a problem and the no right turn would do the job, to no avail. No doubt the accident rate has dropped and guess what measure will get the credit?....

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

Extensive scientific research, at very high cost to the public purse, and over a long period of time, has established that most accidents are a result of a moving object impacting another object.
Nearly a centuries worth of data has been crunched by various univs on their expensively purchased supercomputers, and not one case has been found of a stationary object colliding with another stationary object on any UK highway; without being pushed by a moving object first.
It follows from this research (787 million pounds over 25 years) that the obvious accident prevention measure is to reduce traffic speed to zero when any moving objects are near to each other.
Further research from TheSunHasNothingToDoWithClimate university is expected to confirm that a moving object possessing zero mass would cause no injury upon impact with a stationary object possessing any mass. Legislation is therefore being framed to make vehicle manufacturers produce zero-mass vehicles by 2025.

Perhaps the time has come to return to the old tried and tested system of having a person with red flag walk in front of car .May I be first to sugest that as they profess to be safety experts , members of the local SCP get out of the office and do this job, thus providing the motoring public with proof that they can provide a road safety solution .

If they cut speed limits in Hants any further we'll be going backwards!

That's because if they instead chose to keep the right hand turn and dropped it from to complete with scamera it would also prove to them that it's the speed and not the right hand turn.

I thought you could do 70mph in reverse?
