Would it be a good idea to have - as a sticky somewhere prominent - a summary page of the Great Camera Switch Off?

Maybe as a table, a line for each area, say Wiltshire, that has announced a switch off, then a box detailing what has happened.

e.g. SOMERSET................Fixed cameras........................9 of 26 switched off

My reasoning being that the info is coming out in dribs and drabs, and it would be good to keep a single record for easy reference.

It would also be a good thing for Safespeed PR as I'm sure many non posters would be interested to have a look...

Better yet, an interactive map!! Or a swingometer, everyone loves a good swingometer!

I think Botach and I are thinking along similar lines. Would that I had the technical knowledge to do it myself.

So what do we have so far? (??? indicates that I can't remember)

Swindon - all Gatsos turned off a year ago

Somerset - 9/26 gatsos binned

Dorset - £346000 cut in funding proposed (carried out?)

Oxford - all gatsos and mobiles to go

Thames Valley - ???

South West - ???

Wiltshire - all gatsos and mobiles to go

Derby - ???

Someone who hasn't been at the cider may be able to add a few links to threads so we can flesh this out.

I might have a look tomorrow. Anyway, bed beckons.

:hello:

I wonder if the Sat Navs are going to be updated with this information?

I have the speed camera locations downloaded on my Tom Tom but it sure would be useful if they indicated which ones are inactive.

I guess it still comes back to whether you would trust it, given the price you would have to pay if the Sat Nav got it wrong or the SCP started playing games with the on/off buttons.

In the words of Dirty Harry "...do you feel luck punk?"

The only really safe way is to bag the out-of-use cameras. Tell you what. Let's offer to bag them for them free of charge and with SafeSpeed logo bags. :D

This raise the question of how long local authorities will be prepared to maintain cameras that have been permanently taken out of use. Will they repaint them? Will they restore them if Captain Gatso blows them up? And presumably vandalising a non-functioning roadside device is a considerably less serious offence than vandalising an active speed camera.

The one I mentioned that had self ignited/exploded ( whatever you want to call it ) is still bagged .Warks SCP have said they're not yet ready to give up, BUT this one still stays bagged .I'm keeping a close eye on it ( and the two others like it to see if anything happens to it ,or if the other digital Gatso's get cannibalised to get it working).(Would strongly suggest it WASN'T vandalised ,as there's been nothing in local papers -probably trying a hush up job).

:scratchchin:

I like the idea of Safespeed bags!

Or we "tag" them somehow, and see if they get cleaned up....

Been thinking about this while driving about today - :

I believe that an excel file can easily show data to a database that can then present the data in image format.

Looking at : eg http://www.abcounties.co.uk/ I can also place updates of every County too as a general info and update as we receive it - this can just be a simple image map page with areas highlighted with appropriate data.
The excel file data can be shown as a graph showing how the cameras are declining and I can seek data too on mobile units from each SCP - well those that are lest but also keep asking each Council too.

I would be very happy if people fire data at me via email (little better than PM for this) and then I can get started and add as we go ...

OK, let's get the ball rolling on the research. I suggest anyone that has anything to add (corrections, numbers, dates, etc.) copies & pastes this and edits as appropriate.

Quote:
Swindon - all 3 (?) fixed cameras turned off a year ago. Gatsos bagged.

Somerset - 9/26 fixed cameras binned - Farrington Gurney, Prestleigh, Chilcompton, Green Ore, Binegar, East Brent, East Lyng, Lympsham, Creech Castle

Dorset - £346000 cut in funding proposed (carried out?)

Norfolk - proposing cuts

Oxford - all 72 fixed cameras and mobiles to go

Thames Valley - ???

Buckinghamshire (covered by the above?) - 'to follow Oxfordshire's lead'. Some cameras switched off, won't say which.

Northamptonshire - 8/42 fixed cameras turned off

Nottinghamshire - new camera plans axed

South West - 'No speed cameras will operate in the South West next year' unless extra funding. 'Plans have therefore been made to wind up the.. Safety Camera Partnership by March 2011'

Wiltshire - The Wiltshire and Swindon Camera Safety Partnership (i.e. all fixed cameras and mobiles) to go in the autumn

Derby - 3 fixed cameras (Burton Road, Nottingham Road and a third near the Bridge Inn in Shelton Lock) have been taken out of use, 17 under review.

Bedfordshire, Suffolk and Derbyshire - launched reviews

Essex - reviewing sites on a site by site basis.

Update on Warks -another local paper ,Heartland Evening news has a bit on today's front page with SCP bosses( in Warks) apparently

"reviewing the situation "

So it looks like we may have another county switching off the cameras .
