My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

It is the A1 (M), junction 44, not a normal motorway at this point I think.

I had a look on Google - it's not clear, because I don't know which way they were travelling, but it looks to be a slip lane which joins the motorway, but then continues for some distance, remaining as a lane in itself - then becomes a FOUR lane road, where two lanes pair off and EXIT the motorway further up the road.

That is similar to the M6 at Broughton near Preston where a single lane joins the two on the M6 - and becomes Lane One. Often drivers already on the motorway continue for some distance before they realise that the slip road is in fact the new lane one, and consequently a few drivers on the "slip" who know the layout get annoyed and try to pass the slower vehicle in lane two on the inside - then have to pull out to pass something in lane one - pulling out in front, instead of waiting could end up nudging the front corner of a wagon, impaling the vehicle in a version of the PIT manouvre where the truck scoops the other vehicle rather than shunting it off!

The Traffic Commissioner seems to have shared the concerns that I expressed in one of my earlier posts in this thread about the driving of the Clio!

Road signs that clearly show the new lane should inform motorists of the new lane. I can see the control of traffic but is it wise ? Predictability of road layout is important to ensure all people know 'what' to do and 'what' to expect and provide consistent known road behaviours. Mess to much with that and motorists can become confused, hesitate or assume the wrong things and have near misses or accidents. Those that recognise and think can manage the risk and judge well and handle the change or unexpected situation, but this is no reason not to ensure that good signage informs and educates all to help as much as possible. Perhaps a Black Spot sign too if it is known to have a history of incidents ...
I have seen a few 'motorway into lane' of road and it can work but rarely has immediate other road changes and perhaps that is why this stretch is less than ideal.
