Safer Roads for Cumbria have come up with a cunning plan worthy of Baldric
Image

The idea is that drivers see the sign, and think "SH*T! Somebody had an accident here - I had better bl**dy slow down before I have one too! Better stay alert too!"

Of course, the chances are that they will see the sign, and think "Oh that's aimed at those stupid boy racers I see from time to time." and simply carry on regardless.

Plan B is a giant turnip in the middle of the road, which slows drivers in the same manner as a speed hump as they run over it and squash it.
The slogan for that campaign is "Have a mash, not a smash!"

Now just why would they think that?

It would be useful to know what feature caused the accident, assuming it was the feature of the road that had an impact (in which case that feature should be engineered out if possible); otherwise there is no benefit of placing it at that particular location. Is that particular section of road more vulnerable than others where a lack of alertness is concerned?

Hmm. You have an alternative point of view then? 8-)

This is the Kendal side of Bannerigg, and the scene of a fatal accident a few years back. The two lanes up the hill on the opposite side, merged on a bend, on the crest of the hill.
An 18 year old driver failed to merge in time, and clipped one vehicle, and spun into an oncoming Freelander, and broke his neck.
There was a more recent serious accident, in which a woman was seriously injured.
The other party was prosecuted for causing the accident.
The merging lanes have now been altered to prevent overtaking at all - but the double white lines foolishly zig zag from one side of the centre lane to the other, confusing drivers new to the area. If stuck behind a slow HGV, a few see the double whites cross to the other side, commence their overtake, only to find the whites cross back over just a few metres away, making passing legally impossible. Why the centre lane was not simply made a hatched zone with solid lines at the boundary is a puzzle.

As you can see in the picture in my first post - the central median is dotted at the margins, which the HC states allows for passing if safe - yet clearly it is NOT safe!
