It's rather fitting that the 50th anniversary of motorways in the UK can be celebrated with the opening of the Carlisle-Gretna "Cumberland Gap" M6 section which completes the motorway link from London to Glasgow :D

I'm surprised they are even allowed to talk about that subject in a positive light, nowadays.

I don't remember the very first motorways but I do remember, as thirteen year old, my first motorway trip. It was on the Doncaster Bypass (A1M) just after it opened in 1961 and it was a great adventure. My father stopped our Ford Popular (the old upright 103E - reg no 2224U) at Blythe services and checked tyre pressures, oil and water before braving the motorway. We did that 15 miles in a little over a quarter hour but dad was trembling with the strain!

Happy days :bounce1:

i remember going up the M6 to go to Blackpool at 90MPH in my dad's Wolsley, those were the days, no speed limits and very light traffic.
