56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

I still am having trouble working out how these snake-oil salesmen managed to attract so much political power and attention in so short a time. The politicos worked out in short order how the taxation angle could be played but, from zero to National Curriculum in three years, along with many members of the Scientific Community that I used to regard with respect, seemingly rational members of the Great British Unwashed and Mrs Dawes next door all flung themselves on this 'Yucks's Bandwagon'.

Still, the Politics of Fear must evolve to survive and we eagerly await the next comedy of errors forced upon us by those who make the serious error of assuming that we are less intelligent than they... there will be a reckoning - pass out the rope and show them how to tie nooses.

Problem is, like the article touches on, the green mindset is something predominantly found in well-to-do middle classes, people that all too often can't comprehend what being frugal with resources actually is- be it money, energy or material- because they've never had to make every penny count. So they make these pathetic little "green" gestures in an attempt to offset their rampant consumerist lifestyles, often by buying yet more crap, then, perhaps to deal with their own guilt, hypocritically bray for "green" taxes and other measures, taxes that will impinge mainly on the working classes, who have always been prudent- they buy what they need when something breaks and anything above that is a luxury that has to be carefully considered.

Thats whats wrong with the whole green movement.

The green mindset may well be in the mouths of the middle classes, but thier/our actions are else where. they/we might recycle thier wine bottles but they are transporting them from every country first.
they sell a big car and buy a slightly smaller car with a far more complex design and many more components, They buy a bike, not a simple steel framed bike, but a complex bike with titanium , aliminium and fancey alloys. And it just sits in the garage or travels on the boot rack of thier slightly smaller car.

As Paul was exploring there is almost a diresct relationship between spend and polution.
There might be one exception. There has been a report of less trafic on our motorways due to the fuel increases. however this has been art the same time the pensioners have got thier cross border bus passes. I know quite a few pensioners who have hardly used thier car since and the bus companies are reporting huge strains on thier services by non-revenue customers.

Was it the pensioners cloging up the motorways? are they taking the local bus to a more local shopping center for free?

This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code

I've always maintained that if you want people on public transport, you've got to make it free/nominal cost and give people the option of traveling on a service they've paid for in taxes, or paying again to drive. It's also been pointed out many times that, much as the govm. demonise car commuters, current public transport simply doesn't have the capacity to take a significant number of cars off the road. I believe the figure was 5% of rush hour car commuters would cripple public transport, while making little or no difference to road congestion.

The whole green agenda was a leftist trojan horse dressed up in something a self indulgent affluent economy could swallow.

please note my use of the passed tense.

And I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that for green (in past tense) read global warming /climatechange (with its potential for income production) (in present tense ).And that's something not lost on our present Govt (lead by G Brown (Mfd) in it's constant search for more ways to raise "non taxes " (BTW , my interpretation of fd = financial deception , I'm sure others could suggest a degree more worthy of his talents  )
