The Olympics are far too large and should revert to athletics only. I might be persuaded to add swimming if pushed. Anything requiring an external power source or significant technical equipment should be out.
This will ensure that the UK (note: not GB) will not win very many medals but this does not matter as long as the world's best athletes compete together. It's a competition between individuals so no national teams etc. and no playing National Anthems.
Discuss.

There is also the point about the huge "White elephants" that sucessive olympics leave in their wake (along with the huge debts) in the respective host countries.
My View (for about the last 20 years) is that a perminant facitity should be constructed somewhere (say on a greek island) and the games should be held there every 4 years. (diferent countries can take turns to "Host" the games but leave out this nonsence of littering the world with abandoned costly white elephants)
As for the competicians, Everybody is likly to have an axe to grind on this one. However, an imortant factor is that any technology should be within the grasp (at least in theory anyway) of an "Eddy the Eagle" F1, is NOT! Formula "Lotus 7" as might motorcross (Motorised showjumping really) could well be.
There are precedents. The Greeks had charriot racing, Is (from a philosophical POV) motor racing that different? OTOH Charriot racing would be
A LOT MORE FUN!
Many Greek games tested military skills of the day. Shooting/archary competiciansare are well within the spirit of the original games (as indeed could be mock battles! Paintball contests or perhaps a slightly more grown up version using the weapons/equipment the Army uses on excersise!)
One could even see Gunnery contests (Mock tank battles on salibury proving ground 2012 YeaH!

)
Some (most even) might balk at the idea of "Militarising" the games, But that is what the original games were all about. This thing the Greeks had about declaring peace during the games wasnt an esoteric bit of ideology! War was basically impractical because all the best warriors would be competing and everybody else (of any importance) would be watching!
