Whilst this may not have the quite same implications on privacy as ID cards and the email database it is right up there in the league of impossible government IT projects.

How on earth is it possible to make this work without mountains of beaurocracy. The Billion pounds a year to run has got to be about £40 a year for every taxpayer, and the costs are bound to escalate.

Yes. I heard this today and it's here on the BBC.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7419724.stm

Typical climate criminal stuff all merged with ID cards. Everyone needs a "supermarket loyalty card" to operate this scheme.

It's a load of carbon trading rubbish. If you believe in all this (and that's a big if) why won't just taxing fuel more do the trick? All the stuff from Monbiot about transferring from rich to poor is just tosh.

It's just tax and control in a green coat.

I say bring it on. It will at the very least bring this whole carbon scam to a head. The majority of the public do not believe in man made global warming. This will prompt the backlash we have all been waiting for.

"it's easy for everyone to understand, you all get the same carbon ration."

Now that would be intersting. Like rationing in the war. You will end up with a black market so the rich will not be affected. After all muppets like Al Gore have 20 times the carbon foot print of the agerage american.

It's storys like these that make you realise just how crazy the times we are living in are.

The idea of limiting how giving people a ration of how much "carbon" they can "emit" each year is ludicrous, the fact it's being considered in a serious manner by our own politicians is both hilarious and frightening.
Given that 'Climate Change' as a man-made event is completely unproven (still!) it's frankly insulting they push ahead with so many new taxes and schemes to get us to conform to the idea of it.

I notice that CO2 has become 'carbon' as the nest of vipers must also include another carbon compound, methane (CH4), in its considerations. With this in mind, perhaps we should all be fitted with a spirometer (and some similar device up our clackers) to monitor our actual personal carbon gas emissions. That way our government could fulfill its aim of taxing everyone for the simple fact that they exist.
I did a fag-packet calculation a while ago that showed each person to exhale 400kg of CO2 per year - with six billion souls now orbiting the Sun together, that's 2.4 billion tonnes of CO2 at rest - get out of breath and you really put us in the sh!t...

I've also noticed this. I think it's cos CO2 sounds too friendly a gas... which it is, which is why trees love it. So to make it sounds more doomy they've been slowly changing it to "Carbon" - which definitely (imo) sounds more evil and puppy-killing

And they're holding the Olympics here in 2012, they don't care about the environment

The government slavishly pushing this load of snake-oil is absolute proof to me that they neither know nor care what the electorate think, they just push blindly on quoting hackneyed old chestnuts that the man in the street has long dismissed as nonsense.
I know of two people who actually believe this guff, but then a fool and their money are soon parted, are they not?
The actions of Broon and his band of Pictish tripehounds are those of a dictatorship that, if not overthrown soon, will lead to a far more effective destruction of England than Hitler could ever have wished for.
It is now that Bliar's 'education, education, education' mantra becomes clear - modify education to eradicate any question of the status quo and generate drones who will accept blindly the burdens placed upon them. It almost worked but for one small flaw - Bliar's IQ is at least twenty points down on mine and the girls I help to educate. simple edicts do not wash with us and full answers must be given beyond the boundaries of the National Curriculum and those answers reveal the crumbling foundations of the New Labour policies. The clock is ticking, and time, one way or another, is running out...

:scratchchin:

We all breathe out CO2 which the plants breathe in .. und exhale.. oxygen..

Sound like they will now put a tax on breathing...

Perhaps since these people eat too many lentil burgers und thus fart out hot air..:scratchchin: I think they should pay more since they destroy the planet

this is all making me smile. Labour is deeply unpopular. Yet it keeps on doing/saying things to make it more unpopular. Alot of crap from the goverment will all come to a head soon.

I liked Nick Clegg's comment, that Labour was "circling round the plug hole".

I don't even see how this is workable. A big problem that I can see is people on business related activities. If someone books a flight and claims it on expenses are they now also going to have to buy some carbon credits on eBay and claim those too. Same goes for fuel and anything else they decide to tax with this.

Also what happens when my wallet gets stolen while I'm away from home? Suddenly I'm left with £50 in my pocket and no carbon loyalty card. Does this mean I'm now going to be refused petrol to get home, or am I going to have to take a train, or will that also need a carbon card since it's diesel. Even if the trains are exempt I'm going to have to take it home (causing increased diesel consumption on that train) sit on my arse twiddling my thumbs for however many days it takes the government to issue a new carbon card, then get the train home and hope my car hasn't been stolen/towed in the meantime. It's bad enough when cash cards are stolen but at least with those you can take some ID to the bank and get money.

Also I suspect it is going to be ID cards through the back door since everyone is going to need these if you're refused service without one. What happens if you're a foreign tourist?

I the muppets are capable of making this system work, God help us all.

But, if everyboy can be given a card like this, why not use it to record the state of your Car tax, MOT and insurance status, and have to present it before you can buy fuel for your vehicle, I'm sure they could design it so that it has to be used to unlock a fuel pump, before you fill up.
Ergo, the end, almost, of Tax, insuranceand MOT dodgers in one fell swoop.

:gatso2: Trying to ban carbon now are they? If I remember my science lessons at school, carbon is the only non-metallic, electrically conductive element in the periodic table. The purest forms of carbon are graphite (found in pencil leads) and diamonds (the hardest cutting substance known to man) Dear oh dear oh dear.
