I recently got fined for driving uninsured (bought the vehicle 4 days ago so was still in the process of gettnig quotes from insurance companies  ). Plus the police officer also did not consider my international driving license as I had been in the country for more than one year so he took details of both my international as well as provisional driver details. The officer did not issue me a ticket. Since then I got myself insured and vehicle released. What I would like to know is that how would I know how many points I got for this specific traffic violation I did as I wasn't issued any ticket? I know it can be around 3 to 6 points but how would I know for sure?

I reckon you'll get a summons to court.

I agree - AFAIK driving without insurance is min. 6 points which is enough to part you from your provisional.

For future reference, there are companies out there like DayInsure that provide short-term insurance cover at a fixed price (£10.50 a day).

The potential penalty is anywhere between 6 - 9 points for no insurance, and the fine can be anything up to £5000.

Any points awarded will be placed on your provisional license, but will not count against you under the New Drivers Act for revoking your license once you pass a British driving test.
They will however count against you under "totting up" should you be convicted of anything else.

Also, you did inform your new insurer that you had a prosecution pending against you for no insurance. If you didn't then your new insurance could be invalid

Also, if you've been in the country for more than a year, doesn't the international drivers licence stop being valid and you have to comply with the full rules for a learner driver (ie. L plates and a supervisor) or else you can get done for that too.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably going to get summonsed for "Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence" as well as "Driving without Insurance".

I'd go and talk to a lawyer rather than asking for advice on an internet forum. hopefully I am completely wrong on this.

Nothing like making someone feel at ease Gixxer ;)

You're right of course Gix, I know you know your onions. But if I may...

Fines are a meaningless figure, in my life long experience.

Litter - up to £1000
Dog turd on pavement - up to £500 fine (wonder if it's the same for human turd? :hehe: )
No TV licence - up to £1,000

etc. etc.

I've never known anyone ever get this 'up to' fine in any walk of life in my entire life's experience - and I'm getting very old now :)

It's a modern day soundbite designed to put the willies up you and act as a deterrent. (Can't blame them for it, but that's all it is. Unless you really are a criminal of course, in which case you have even less to worry about these days  )

The reality is always well below any 'up to', especially if there are mitigating circumstances. So don't worry about the fine. I'm sure you will get a fine but if it's £5000 I'll eat the remains of my dead grandmother. (NHS black SOH, or I'm just weird)

The penalty points are what are going to hurt you long term.

You did a bad thing dude. :nono: I speak as someone who got knocked off my motorbike by an uninsured driver, circa 1977. His fault - he even admitted it! Side swiped me at a crossroad while I was on the main road :(

Short version: He was uninsured and he hurt me: physically, mentally and financially at the time :( Nuff said.

Hope you have learned from it and hi :welcome:

I think it depends on your finances Tone.

The likes of you or I (or Gallian even) would probably get stung for £300 or so, although if we were filthy rich then I have no doubt it would be a lot higher.

I was simply letting him (or her) know the facts as they stand.

I know bud and I hope I gave credit where due

Just, (hopefully), trying to reassure someone who may be on the worse side of pecuniary depletion.

When I was young and naive, this aspect was a very important part in my life. :(

When you are waiting and wondering if you are going to be hung or shot at dawn and money is tight, is nice to know in advance that you are not going to be taken to the cleaners...

Hope this is helpful gallian96?
