Quote:
Ban motorcycles, safety expert says
By David Millward, Transport Editor

Motorbikes should be banned as part of a plan to eliminate road deaths, a safety expert has claimed.

Erin Baker's motoring blog
Iveco LMV: Dangerous World
The goal of stopping deaths on the roads has been set by a number of countries including Norway, Australia and Sweden, where the programme has been called “Vision Zero”.

But Norwegian safety expert Rune Elvik said for it to happen, policy makers should consider the radical step of banning motorbikes.

“If they are serious about these lofty road safety ambitions that have been announced then I think such a discussion is needed,” he said in an interview with Motor Cycle News.

“Motorcycling would definitely not be allowed.”

Mr Elvik, research chief at the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics, said motorcycles are incompatible with the target of eliminating road deaths.

But his view was dismissed by Craig Carey-Clinch, spokesman for the Motorcycle Industry Association.

“He clearly does not understand the contribution motorcycling makes to transport, easing congestion and reducing CO2 emissions. He really needs to get a sense of perspective.”

Take this to its ultimate conclusion

dig up all roads and you get

No roads therefore no road deaths

This is pretty old news as Vision Zero has been about for some time.

Unfortunately, as the single object of this programme is to reduce deaths on the road to zero by any means, it is supported by people who fail to take into account the real world and the risks of life.

As Malcolmw says, it's quite old news and lead to the Mulhouse Declaration around 10 years back.
The worrying thing as that these nutters are still getting some form of a living out of this nonsense.
I think this may be the same guy that is pushing "intelligent" speed control, a system of linking all vehicles to GPS and automatically adjusting speeds to comply with the limit at the vehicles location.

Bloody ridiculous - if they start doing draconian things like that I'd go and live somewhere that isn't a nanny state.

By the same logic pedal cycles should be banned too.

:scratchchin: Oh no, can't do that, they're shibboleths of political correctness

Yep.....To continue on this thinking would require cycling to be banned, since mile-for-mile cycling only half the risk of motorcycling and fifteen times more dangerius than driving a car.

I wounder how that one would go down!

Its a very old story. Even in Sweden (where it is "claimed" to be adopted) they have a very large motorcycling community and the Swedish government have stated they will not ban motorcycles.

I can't believe this crap still keeps circulating.

It's all part of the crap spewed forth for which I blame H&S.

We'd better ban all our kitchen knives too, because knives kill.

We'd better ban alchohol because that kills.

We'd better ban cheap food becuase some people don't eat responsibly.

"Help me nanny! Protect me from the big bad world!"

I stubbed my toe on the coffee table the other day, I think we should ban them too. (actually, it really did hurt :hoppingmad: )

I'm with you zcar, I can see a day when I'll be off. Let me know which country's best, I'm thinking France, America or Spain...

I remember you from when you worked at Sleap airfield in the cafe :)

Did you use to come in on a VFR now and again?

Do Wem still complain about overflying aircraft on base?

Oh,oh! I nearly forgot a biggie..

Whatever you do DON'T GET ON A HORSE!

Figures from Stoke Mandeville hospital have revealed that horse riders are over 21 times more likely than motorcyclists to have a serious accident.

The hospital found that horse riders have a serious accident every 350 hours on average, compared to every 7500 hours on a motorcycle.

Sorry, no more horse riding (Think I know what Claire will think of that ;) )

I've just realised what that means. The more horse power you have the safer. :hehe:

I never take much notice of the ban motorbike thing that keeps on cropping up because it always seem to crop up but never goes anywhere near becoming legislation.

If it ever does get close to becoming EU legislation i would be one of the first out on the streets protesting against it with no doubt thousands of others.

I find it a shame these days they probably get paid loads of money to come up with these solutions, in their profession they could come up with decent ideas to improve the safety of riders like http://www.smidsy.org.uk/ but instead they go for cheap publicity and spout crap.

I wouldn’t say motorcycles are dangerous as such but there is defiantly a higher risk involved riding them and the driver needs to be aware of this and employ decent defensive riding techniques.

I couldn't agree more with you Kenny/Ken.

There would be the biggest uprising this country has seen in a very long time if they tried that. They have already turned the screw on us, you only have to look at how few younger people are taking it up.

They should be encouraging motorbikes in this greener world. It's discrimmination, plain and simple!

I personally know people of all ages and backgrounds who are passionate about motorcycling.

It never ceases to amaze me how minority groups are protected and no-one dares to say a thing, but when it comes to motorbikes we're a fair target.

I'm sorry but you are living in hope here. Over a million people took to the streets to support hunting. The result: a ban. The Government will take no notice of you. There is a significant minority of people who will support a motorcycle ban (as they are "obviously dangerous") just like the camera supporters.

You see, if your opinion supports Government policy you are worth 100 opponents.

I did think of that example but IMHO there wasn't gobs of money involved. The motorcycle industry is worth a small fortune, even in little ole' GB.

If there was money to be made in the fox hunting issue you can bet it would be alive and thriving today, (except for the foxes of course) ;)

You can always count on governments to do the rig£t thing.

Forgive me but, I just had to google :)

"Diversity in motorcycling is maintained as figures released by the Motor Cycle Industry Association show a continuing growth on the year to date sales from 2004 to 2005 in the adventure sport (32%), naked (15%) and custom (7%) sectors.

The registration figures overall show that the total sales of motorcycles during June 2005 are just up by 1% on June 2004, but total registrations, including mopeds and scooters, for the year to date and month on month comparisons are however down by 2%. By comparison to the car industry, motorcycle sales are more favourable. The car industry saw a drop in sales figures. New car registrations in July 2005 are down 6.6% on July 2004 and down 5.9% year to date."

Interest and enthusiasm for motorcycling is still strong in the UK, and there are approximately 3.5 million people who have motorcycle entitlement on their licence. There is also good news for motorcyclists that riding a bike or scooter, of any type is getting safer.

Department for Transport figures show the number of powered two-wheeler (PTW) casualties fell by 16% in 2004 (585 deaths) compared to 2003. Although PTW traffic fell during this period it resulted in a further improved casualty rate per mile.

Craig Carey-Clinch, MCI's Director of Public Affairs said, "Motorcycle sales have remained relatively stable this month and people are still choosing a diverse range of bikes to meet their different needs. Year to date figures show that the adventure sport sector is experiencing the biggest growth but when you look at the figures from July 2004 compared to July 2005 the sports/ touring sector saw an increase of 13% and the supersport sector an increase of 10%.

"People's interest in motorcycling is broadening and there are more reasons than ever for people to either continue riding or start, whether it is for leisure or commuting purposes. Safer roads, avoiding congestion and adopting a cost-effective and convenient way of travelling are just some of the explanations that maintain motorcycling's appeal.

with this mind set we perhaps should all be driving SUV's, after all they are big and are more likely to squash than be squashed. But as we all know on here 'tis better not to crash in the first place.

Once all motorcycles are banned how are all those 2 wheeled commuters going to get to work? Even on the stupidly short distance I ride mine to work each day I get a good 70mpg and it never gets warmed up, the car might get 20mpg. Should I ride the bike to save the world or drive the car to save myself?
