Legalities gents ???

30 limits ,in lit area - then the sign "20 when lights flash "- ok - wakes up ms numpty to fact that kids are around. Then at the end ,what do we have -- oh yes a :30: .Now --with the reduction to :20: , possibly ok, but then again with no :20: in force , could this be regarded as a repeater ( although a full sized sign ) and negate the whole :30:

Probably not.
I believe these "20 when lights show" signs are a Scottish thing? I haven't looked into the diagrams. If it has a black border around the whole sign then it's an entire sign in its own right and will have a definition in law somewhere. Or at least you'd hope they have created one...

Only time I've seen them has been up north - but then unless the road traffic acts have been split - the law's the same on both sides of the border - problem I pointed out was that the 30 sign could be seen as a repeater --and that's not allowed - but then again - it' could be another "loophole "

There are differences in Scotland, and it could well be that the diagram for the "20 when flashing" sign is approved only in Scotland.

I believe a 30 repeater where there are street lamps would make the sign illegal, not the restriction.

Where we've installed them we have Scottish Executive (as it was then) blanket authority to install the 20 when lights flash signs, as well as speed limit countdown signs; We have to apply for any non TSRGD signs.

And Ive heard form a few people that the 30 roundels on the rear of the signs are unnecessary, but I never considered the repeater angle, will ask on Monday :)
