I despair at some of the new speed limits I see on our roads, where none existed before.
There's one particularly annoying anomaly on the A4 near Twyford, Berks - not far from where I live. I decided to share this with you guys.
In this first picture, we have a stretch of dual carriageway on which a speed limit of 50 has been imposed - something to do with when Prescott was tinkering with transport.
This dual carriageway section is about a mile long, and apart from the bus stop where I was standing to take the pic., there is only about one turning onto a frontage road, no houses have driveways on to the A4 to the right of the A4 in the picture, and the left side of the A4 adjoins fields, with sheep in them. So why the 50 limit? Is there a risk of a sheep suddenly deciding to leap from the field and onto the road?

Also, have a look at those countdown markers on the central divider - 200yds, then 300yds. -what the heck does that mean then?! (There was no countdown marker for 100yds at all)
About 2 miles further on, the road becomes a single carriageway, with turnings on both sides of the road, and a busy Wyevale Garden Centre driveway opening onto the scene shown in the next picture. And yet - the speed limit here is 60!!
...and in the other direction, it looks like this -
Just around that bend on the right is the Horse & Groom pub and local "BeefEater" restaurant, so lots of cars going in and out of there.
I'm afraid these speed limits and signs make very little sense to me. Between the two photo locations is the famous Carlisle Corner footbridge, which is ignored by most of the school children it was designed to serve. There are also signs counselling drivers to kill their speed because of the 14 injuries at this spot, even though I have substantial .AVI evidence which demonstrates that speed is not an issue.
So from now on, I think I'll just use my own discretion with regard to speed. I have very little faith left in the people who decide our speed limits, and who erect the warning signs.
