Here in Essex the radio stations seem to be making a big thing od "All roadworks is stopped over Xmas, making the roads clearer for the holiday period". Councillors interviewed - all with accolade - all good stuff, jolly old pals. Three things:

1) From what I can gather most areas of England are doing this.

2) As I remember, they usually so, but without the big splash of publicity

3) Is this not all spin, and the reason they've done it is surely money - to avoid paying double time?

Or am I being too cynical and this is not cheap point scoring by the council after all?

not cynical at all, I suspect money too. Also, if they don't REMOVE the roadworks, and instead just stop doing them, the obstructions/lane closures are still there, just with the added frustration of them not being done (but that seems to be the norm anyway :))

It's almost impossible to be too cynical.

These two points are not related. Roadworks stop but the cones etc. may still be there. You don't need to pay the workers but you obstruct travel all the same. A win for the Council then.

This is a Highways Agency initiative, I think.

I noticed that at the Brook Street Roundabout (M25 J28) the roadworks have been suspended BUT all the works took place behind the barriered off areas and some of the plant on site has been vandlised so more delays repairing plant.

In addition to the cones and barriers still being present the camera vans are still lurking around....
