Police Speeders To Lose Licences
19-Nov-07
Amnesty offered to officers ahead of looming crisis due to the 7 points rule that could mean a shortage of police drivers...

Hundreds of police officers face losing their police driving licences after being caught by speed cameras.

In London alone, a “significant” number of officers have not declared penalty points clocked up off duty, as required by rules.

The Metropolitan Police have offered an amnesty to staff to own up to penalty points before action is taken against them.

But top brass fear a looming crisis from the amnesty because regulations mean all police workers on seven points or more will still be banned from driving any vehicle on duty — including their own.

A source said: “Police driving permits are taken away from any staff who accrue seven points or more.

"There will be hundreds affected and it could lead to a shortage of drivers.”

In another headache for under-fire Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, the Directorate of Professional Standards — investigating staff over disciplinary claims — became aware of the driving points during checks on the Police National Computer.

Sources said that in a small number of cases, PNC checks also led to undeclared criminal convictions being found.

The amnesty for Met workers to disclose driving points runs until the end of this month.

A Met spokesman said: “Taking into account the possibility that some Fixed Penalty Notices are not reported through ignorance of their responsibility, officers will not face a misconduct investigation if they declare them by November 30.”

He said it did not mean cops will have penalty points removed from their licences.

And yet the system is working is it?

Not only are these officers, per their own organisation, potential murderers ('drifting a knife into someone'), but they also lack the integrity to own up to their offences off their own backs.

Not the sort of people I'd want to serve alongside!

I love that comment about speeding being like "drifting a knife into someone", where did it come from originally.

It always gives me this image of someone trying to stab you only holding the knife sideways.

It was a quote from Richard Brunstrom:-

Richard Brunstrom wrote:
"It is against the law and there is no excuse for drifting over the limit any more than there is for drifting a knife into someone."

The same Brunstrom who according to the BBC...

North Wales Police chief constable Richard Brunstrom has said he will be "campaigning hard" for drugs such as heroin to be legalised.

In the past, Mr Brunstrom has said drugs laws are out of date and that the police are engaged in a battle which they cannot win.

Selective reasoning?
Drugs laws out of date but nothing has changed over the decades to impact speed limits?
Police can't win a battle against drug dealers but they can against motorists?

So many questions - so many flawed arguments!

Bring it on! I say! The sooner we see essential services (closely followed by the rest of the country) grind to a halt, the better! I have some time for coppers who get nicked while "on a shout" but if they've clocked up somepoints in their private lives, well, "welcome to the world you helped create", chaps!

But what about all those police officers who have nothing to do with traffic? The ones who spend their days going after armed robbers and the like?
I'm under the impression that a lot of those aren't exactly fans of traffic police in general and speed cameras in particular, so why tar them with the same brush.

Think of all the public money wasted training them to police driving standards, and in how to deal with firearms situations, and all those years of experience now all being pissed away for the sake of a couple of fixed penalties which are almost unavoidable in London these days.

Oh well, I'm sure we need more desk sargents too.

I have always thought that a bit of selective "Civil dissobediance" might yeild dividends.

IE all Truck and bus drivers (and perhaps some others too) deliberatly speed past cameras. within 3 months the government would have to relent or face a country that has ground completly to a halt with people rioting in the streets!

That would simply allow the government to bring in even more foriegners to do jobs that the government had caused the employees to lose, and also destroy whatever is left of or haulage industry.
Or, is that what they want?

If we were to get into a 'rioting in the streets' scenario, I imagine that sort of response by the government would provoke even more rioting.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

 Just had a police driver in my area who ran two red lights on a 'shout' 'get away' with killing a civilian not guilty not even to careless driving.
