"was fined £100 for driving with no insurance"

my insurance cost me £1174 this year (21, male, no crashes, no points, 1 yrs ncb) - Is it any wonder uninsured rates are going up when it is clearly much cheaper to just not bother and risk a telling off

:gatso2: Add to that, he's been committing driving offences since the 1950's :yikes: :stop:

Won't somebody think of the children?

Ok apart from hanging him , which the uk including Northern Ireland have abolished, What effective punishment can we impose on a 67 year old nightmare who does not fear or learn from being sent to prison or being banned for 35 years.

Whilst I agree that the sentence was wholy inapropriate, I cannot come up with any thing that would work.
community service? too old?
Jail expensive, too old, dosent frighten him, mor fun than an oap home?
Suspended sentence, he is not bovvered
Fine, cant fine him much out of his pension?

I am not defending the court, just pointing out the options I know of.

:gatso2: I agree that the options open to the court leave a lot to be desired. But I think locking him up is the only solution, as cushy as that may be. He would be off the streets and unable to drive a car and risk killing someone.

I would be a hanging Judge !

My present job (HM Forces) stops me being a magistarate, but when I become a proper civiy I intend to apply and It will be my mission to send as many scrotes to prison as I can.

My politics are only slightly right of Atilla the Hun :)

I actually strongly believe in the LAW /democracy .

I hate trial by media and will give everyone the benefit of the doubt and a second chance .

BUT if they cross the line and are obviously taking the P**S then down they should go.

Sorry Hampshireian but you will never get to be a Magistrate. You are far too sensible, have far too many life skills and have probably got a doctorate in common sense.

No reason why you shouldn't apply. There are a number of ex-forces on my bench - including me.

Your problem will come at appraisal time. In order to stay on the bench you will have to prove that you understand the law, can apply it as written and are capable of leaving your personal prejudices and beliefs at the door of the court. If you can't do that you will get a nice letter saying goodbye.

Add to that the fact that you will be part of a bench of 3 and your chance of imposing unreasonably harsh sentences is just about zero.

That about sums it up. People like him are a nightmare to sentence. At his age he probably did national service so jail won't bother him one little bit. He may even prefer jail to what is on offer outside. Regular meals and no need to take decisions of any kind have an attraction to a surprising number of people.
We have a few regulars like that, who can be relied upon to smash a few shop windows as soon as the first frosts come round each year.

I haven't read any of the reports about this but I would expect the court to have imposed some kind of immediate sentence with the suspended custody to come into effect if he either re-offends or fails to comply with whatever immediate sentence was imposed.

Don't worry during the day I am an upright citizen. It's only late at night after a couple of drinks that my tabloid opinions leak out :D
