It's every cyclist's nightmare - it's dark or getting that way, you have just given a hand signal, but will other road users have seen it?


Well, they will now, thanks to an innovative jacket with flashing indicators on the sleeves and brake lights in the back.

Its inventor Michael Chen has landed a design award for the high-tech coat and hopes to find a manufacturer to produce it on a mass scale.

Amber indicators are triggered to flash by a "tilt-switch" when the wearer raises their arm to give a hand signal.

And a device called an "accelerometer" is used to turn an LED, woven into the jacket's back, green when the rider is moving forward or red when they apply the brakes.

London-based Mr Chen, 28, got the idea watching cyclists in the capital. He said: "There is a lot of hostility from bus and cab drivers towards cyclists.

"Cyclists are brave. It is so dangerous without bike lanes. When I visited Korea last year, I noticed their cities had better bike lanes than London."

It could incude a pressure pad and dial an ambulance when they get squashed.

Oh I see, that's a good point actually. Maybe it doesn't go off when your arm is bent.

Where I live it would be useful to have an inflatable jacket which goes off on impact, like the airbag in cars. Hmmm Na - would be too hot to wear methinks. Also, I guess you would end up rolling down the road into on-coming traffic.

I just realised what I said was nonsense. (no good being daft if you don't prove it occasionally).

It looks like it works by raising your upper arm, that's got to be where the mercury switch is.


Now you've got me wondering how you wipe your nose ed?

i've seen at least one similar indicator system around on a pair of gloves, can;t really see the point in them flashing but suitable reflective or illuminated parts do seem a good idea.

not sure of the point of the brake lights, the speed differential between bike & traffic is big enough that if they havent seen you they're going to wipe you out whether you're doing 15mph, 10 or 0....

stick with hi vis & lighting up like a christmas tree.

(which reminds me, i must put some money aside for some obscenely expensive lights this year)

My friend got one of these a year ago, turns night into day!!! I thought my £240 Lupine was good until I saw what the Hope does using HID technology. Seriously WOW!

I know mercury is bad stuff but when it comes to tilting it's the only liquid metal around. They still use it but only in very secure bomb proof enclosures I think.

You can switch much more current with a real mercury switch.
