The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has swooped to protect Britain from mechanised filth peddlers who it suspects will exploit the new "57" number plates to mount a terrifying campaign of highway ribaldry.

The new plates will allow drivers to spell "ST" or "SY", opening the floodgates to a torrent of eye-watering obscenity.

According to the Sun, bureaucrats at the agency are particularly concerned by BA57 ARD (Bastard) and TE57 CLE (Testicle), and have deleted them from the list of available registrations.

EC57 ASY (Ecstasy), MY57 ASH (My Stash), H057 AGE (hostage) and HE57 ABS (He stabs) have also been blacklisted, and EA57 GAL (Easy Gal) invoked the censor's pen too.

A DVLA spokesman said the action was taken to avoid "general offence or embarrassment". Quite right too, especially as it's not the first time the agency's had a bit of bother over smut.

Creative use of "57" is welcome in our comments section, however. ®

Check out the commentssection

Another racially motivated post from you.

Wasn't it Jimmy Tarbuck that had COM 1C, and Paul Daniels MAJ 1C.
I know the British Legion has LEG 10N, and most of my company trucks have the letters BBT in the registration.
In the early 80s, I was in Basinstoke and saw the reg SAM 130 on a Black Escort XR3i, and it was driven by a big black Man, would that be allowed today?

Some that escaped (long before their significance was realised)

UPU 2

PEN 15

VIR 61N

(all genuine)

Others that they wished they'd spotted sooner and could have made a packet from...

TUR 80

Years ago I believe that one of the bosses at Bulmers in Hereford had the registration 61DER

I also saw in some car magazine a while back the registration A110WME
Very polite.

You wouldn't have seen it on a pink Escort- it's my mum's, and her Escort was silver.
