More than 33,000 vehicles had their number plates stolen last year as car cloning continued to soar.

Criminals use them to avoid number plate recognition systems used at petrol stations, in speed cameras and in congestion charge areas. In 2006/07 there were 33,411 thefts compared with 32,628 in 05/06 and 26,183 the year before. Thief-proof plates have been launched which shatter when tampered with but cost twice as much at £20 a pair. Paul Smith, of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, said: "These are crimes that the Government has created.

Just try proving you are innocent when someone has cloned your plate."

And as ever more good safe drivers get banned for speeding it's easy to see how this problem will escalate - easy for everyone accept the government I suspect.

It's not just about the theft of plates but also a lucrative black market I shouldn't wonder.

Well, not everyone is a thief after all. and for those who need their licence to provide an income to keep a roof over their head and food etc it's going to be a difficult, and obvious, choice for many.

I wish there was another planet I could move to...

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

As usual the normally "law abiding" public get tarred and feathered with fines and points - and the growing number of illegals with no tax,licence, insurance, mot and absence of legal cars is more than worrying.

This increasing menace is more than likely to be involved in highly dangerous driving also.

If the govt and police had an ounce of common sense and wanted to up their ratings - then they'd target this scourge - and make the roads better and safer over night.

But no - they continue to target Mr and Mrs Average and their children for petty fines,points, disq's and loss of job and taxes we pay into system. Police forgetting that its these normal law abiding people paying their wage at the end of the day in their hard worked "taxes".

Whereas the illegals and their dodgy number plates (etc etc) get further and further off the radar...

Lets get real and tackle the real cause of problems and anarchy on our roads in the uk.
