Yes, they use marking on the road to carry out time distance readings.

They weren't charged with speeding, but dangerous driving, which we know has nothing at all to do with speed, as confirmed by the courts.

Doubt that there's any type approved speed measurement devices for airborne deployment, though I guess a calibrated video could record the time it took them to pass measured distances.

Many modern bikes could probably outrun a helicopter on the motorway if they were willing to speed round traffic.

You mean something like a Hayabusa Turbo with 18lbs of boost?

Note that the speedo is calibrated in MPH

I believe my unmodified Blackbird could also outrun a helicopter?

Not that I ever would even try though...

And note the ""Since the accident, my personal opinion is that they should ban motorbikes altogether, but I know that can't be done," said his father Stephen. "

So where's the call to ban cars, pushbikes, planes etc.?

Why do people want to ban something that someone has had an accident with? Grrr.

That all depends on the helicopter, but the top speed of the helicopters used by police is only 140mph

Automatic knee-jerk reaction.

Are you sure thats not knots?

140kts = 161.3mph

Additionally, a headwind will slow a land vehicle by a factor of its value related to the vehicle's aerodynamics, it will slow the aircraft's groundspeed by its full value. Similarly for a tail wind, though that favours the aircraft.

Of course, aircraft can also fly straight lines rather than following a road, and their optics do not require them to be anywhere near overhead to get a fix, so to escape one would require outrunning it by a significant margin for a significant time.

You are correct Robin, however a standard Blackbird is still significantly faster.

As for outrunning one, while it is possible under "test" conditions I don't think that anybody was under the impression that it would actually be possible in "real" world conditions.

If course not that you'd know from personal experience, eh? (or as if you could even SEE the speedo at that speed! )

I'm sure when you gain height, you could keep a bike in sight for a while in open country.

In the meantime, has anyone seen those Crazy Boys ? Turn your sound up loud too if you like Muse!

I feel that I ought to include this one.... and give a plug to the Windermere Airshow on July 28/29th featuring the Red Arrows at mid day on Sunday.

I've heard the speedo is still visible at an indicated 172mph on the M3 between J2 (M25) and J1 (Sunbury Cross) at around 2am

The RAF used to do that off Southsea Beach, in Canberras! From the top of the beach, you could look along the TOP of the wing.

Didn't somebody once fly a Spitfire under Tower Bridge?

As to helios, I have seen the Navy roll a Lynx, and Loop the loop.
Maybe Robin has some experience of the Puma?
