Sorry to post a new topic on a small matter but I don't know where else to post it.

Every bloody year, at about this time of year, some goof from the council spreads aggregate along the entire length of a perfectly smooth safe dual carriageway bypass near to where I live and stick a 20 mph warning sign because of the chippings it creates.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the road, not so much as a single pot hole or rough patch, but I see this happen somewhere every year in the Midlands. It completely ruins the stretch of road for weeks afterwards.

Can someone tell me why they do this?

Also, If the speed limits are so precise because of the danger aspect, (so they say), then why don't we see 35 mph or 45 mph limits? Why is it that they only recognise increments of 10 mph? If they have to be so obsessed with the numerical value then why don't they recognise that there are places where 30 is too slow but 40 is too fast etc.?

AH - Surface Dressing. Wonderfull for increasing trade for the body and windscreen chip business, and making a perfectly safe DC into a dangerous road .Perhaps done to generate some evidence for the SCP pickpockets.

Tone, I'm glad you mentioned this as there is a section of the A41 between Weston and Cosford that is currently devoid of road markings, plastered with road signs warning of loose chippings, and where said chippings are conspicuous by their absence

To and from work, I have seen no cones, no workmen, no heavy plant, nothing.

But the best thing is, there are signs dictating a 20 limit placed next to blue signs stating "Speed Check Area"

I didn't know this topic had been covered before but I think maybe the other thread didn't highlight what I witness which, like I say, is that they do it on a perfectly good road.

We all know how tight-fisted councils can be and it can't be cheap to do, so it seems to go against their parsimonious nature as well as being very dangerous for road users.

It happens on a stretch called the Alvechurch bypass, South of Birmingham. I'm not sure if it comes under Reddich or Bromsgrove council.

If I knew they were going to do it I would loved to have taken a before and after picture. It really is quite ridiculous.

I totally agree with what Grumpy Old Biker said on the other thread, about using a bike on that surface. It feels bad enough in a car but on a bike you are literally taking your life in your hands!
