He was a serving Labour MP for Ealing, Southall; Majority: 11440 votes.
There will be a by-election to replace him. The labour party will be embarrased if this majority is significantly reduced or even beaten.
This by-election will be a measure of peopls support for Gordon Brown and the Labour party.

I come back to my original political argument which is to say how will society function once people, every kind of people, start getting banned? The impact will quite literally bring the country to a halt.

Also, if we're effectively stopped from using the roads, how is the chancellor going to get money from us then? As we all know, the revenue generated from petrol and road tax, etc. is worth a small fortune to the government. So too are the tax gains leached indirectly, from businesses like garages or, as simple as it sounds, those little shops and places you would normally go to but can't anymore.

Car sales will diminish and businesses would start closing branches because of declining sales, all resulting in more unemployment. If you cannot get there easily using personal transport, chances are you're just not going to bother. I can't exactly leg-it up the motorway to Ikea and carry a flat pack home on my back, so I won't bother. We'll be stuck in our house more. (condom manufacturers and Sky TV will benefit I'm sure)

The very people who support widespread use of speed cameras will be affected too, when the gas man or Tesco home delivery cannot deliver because they can't get the drivers. Of course there are many important services which need drivers; doctors, ambulance and fire services, police etc. What happens when they are banned?

Crime will inevitably rise, although the statistics will be massaged as usual. The ramifications will be far reaching and I'm sure I've only touched on the tip of a very large iceberg.

I believe eventually that politicians will solicit votes based on new road policies which won't persecute those who are safe drivers and decent citizens. Either that or I'm going to join my friends and colleges abroad - all too many these days.

Will the last person leaving England kindly turn out the lights...

Did anyone watch the Bremner, Bird & Fortune program on Monday night? excellent review of the blair years. Just be thankful they are over ... anyone care to open a book on:

1. How soon Gordon Brown is challenged for another leadership battle or has a vote of no confidence from his own party, and,
2. How soon after the next election David Cameron will step down as leader of the opposition?

I really don't think the next election will dump new labour out of office, sadly. The tories have a couple of years to get themselves in order, but I can't see it happening under Cameron.

Someone else on these boards suggested abolishing the party whip system - I'd vote for that!!

[edit] but I'd rather vote for a party that recognised social responsibility - we used to have a thing called socialism, but new labour locked it in the attic like a mad old relative!!

Today, you have the choice between right or far right. I'm old enough to remember Ted Heath's years, or was it a year I think? He looks left compared to New Labour.

My prediction? A huge swing towards parties like the BNP as a protest vote and I'll eat my hat on national TV if I'm wrong. Watch this space - I'll be jumping up and down shouting I told you so one day.

Gordon Brown will face a double poll test within a month of becoming Prime Minister after the Government launched the process to replace Tony Blair as an MP.

A by-election in Sedgefield is now expected on July 19 after the outgoing PM quit Parliament to take up a new role as a peace envoy in the Middle East.

Voters will also go to the booths to elect a replacement for veteran Ealing Southall Labour MP Piara Khabra, who died last week, aged 82.
