Dear All
I am a new driver and was caught jumping red light at 16 miles speed... It was in morning traffic with cars back to back and i missed the light turning red. I accept my guilt.. I have been fined 60 pounds and 3 points.
I came to know from a friend that there may be an option of paying 90 pounds fine and a course of road safety to avoid the 3 points.. but i dont have more information on that.
If anybody can help that will be a big favour to me...
Thanking the members in advance..
Cheer!

Obviously it wasn't deliberate however lack of observation for so long a period could be fatal. It is very good that you're willing to pay to attend a course, so I wish you best of luck but i'm not sure if that option is applicible to red light violation.

I would like to know more about the red light. Is it clearly visible or is there a potentially lethal arrangement which the authorities have a duty to consider? If you're not the only one then we really need to get something done about this junction for the benefit road safety!

For instance does it have those stupid slats over the light that obscure it?

They do call it a "speed awareness course"... (not a "safety awareness course", hmm)
I believe some places only give you the offer after you've fessed up to the crime.

I don't think they put slats on the red light. (red is such a pretty colour after all) So if they have then it might be against the regs.

I've never seen slatted reds either, but it's still easy enough to be caught out just with slatted green & amber - approaching the lights you can see the green is lit, as you get closer the slats obscure the green *and* the subsequent change from green to amber, and just as you get too close to safely stop the red suddenly turns on...

...on a sort-of-related point, has anyone else noticed a trend for new light installations to place the lights in a position where they can only be seen if you stop at least half a car length back from the stop line, or if you lean forward in your seat to see past the roofline?

Oh dear .. I think there is a restriction on DIS/Speed Awares for drivers on two years probation and on alread on 9 points .. though I think I am perhaps incorrect on the latter ? :?

Rule of thumb .. always expect a traffic light to change. It's Murphy's Law. It is bad luck .. and I would do two things in your situation..

Get an RA. It does not help with red lights but forewarns of speed cams. An origin is better .. this reminds you of speed limits and will bleep if set to "over-speed". It all helps long term  and helps you concentrate on actual skill development.

Go into archives. Read IG's COAST post. He talks sense. Read his Hendon notes. I may well be biased as I know the guy as my wife's cousin and a personal pal  - but it's common sense stuff in reality and provides some useful tips overall.

Drive vigilantly and to COAST rules. If you err again .. you will have to retake L-test and still be on 6 points. If you are really worried .. contact IAM with a view to further skills. It all helps long term and builds confidence too.

Oh. I saw one today. M27/M271 heading east. Red light with slats. They were easier to see through than the amber/green though, but there it was!

Yup. I've no idea what the point of this is. There are even some in Newport where the nearer light changes to green 2 seconds before the set opposite. So all the cars behind the first start moving, but the first car doesn't. Chaos. :x
