I've had two emails from Roger.

Apparently from his perspective Safe Speed has been down all morning.

He can't even access it via IP address at: http://66.29.138.186

Traffic from the logs at the hosts seems normal, so I'm thinking Roger's problem is pretty local.

I'm guessing that there's some sort of cabling or routing server problem. Any ideas how we can narrow it down? I don't know who Roger's ISP is yet.

Ask Roger to do a "traceroute" (tracert in Windows) from him to your server and note where the routing falls over. If possible, ask him to pm you the trace.

I don't have any issues - so I'm pm'ing you a traceroute from me to you so that you can compare the two to see if there's any common routing.

HTH,

:yesyes: Great minds... I emailed that exact suggestion to Roger at 12:54.

This I don't understand. Both Roger and I are routing through advantagecomm-gw.go180.net [64.35.142.54] and in my case www.safespeed.org.uk is the next step (and successful).

All that I can think of is that someone on Roger's route doesn't like you and is blocking traffic to/from www.safespeed.org.uk. Has anyone else reported routing failures?

Yeah. That's exactly what I concluded over lunch.

Not yet, no. And I made this post on Pistonheads about 90 minutes ago:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topi ... 8&f=10&h=0 (requires free registration)

Quote:
Hiya,

I've had a report that someone can't access the Safe Speed website today at www.safespeed.org.uk nor at its IP address of http://66.29.138.186

It's working fine from here, but I can't usefully ask folk on Safe Speed if they are having access problems because if they were they wouldn't see the message!

If you CAN'T access Safe Speed today please reply and give your ISP.

No replies as yet.

Looks like a screwy routing table somewhere.

Thought the East Coast USA route looked a bit funny, so tried mine, which yielded a similar route! Where are the SS servers located?

Well, advantagecomm-gw.go180.net [64.35.142.54] is my last hop before the SS server, and I get the site fine, clearly, so that router is okay.

Must be an ISP issue.

Test post by proxy - what IP does it show up as I wonder? My real IP is .... 83.67.9.56

Edit: It shows up as 208.101.43.2 - "youhide". Well I never. I have never done anything anonymously (that I can remember) in my life before - now I am driven to this because - somehow - my ISP has put the blocks on me getting here via a legit route. Curiouser and curiouser.

Thanks everyone for help - been out most of the afternoon so only just catching up with this - and still I can't get on via the front door to here (but no problem at all with all my other regular haunts).

This is definitely worrying. Someone, somewhere has blocked Safe Speed access deliberately.

Roger, please contact your ISP ASAP and ask them.

Yeah. We used to own that domain. I gave email instruction to my domain registration agent to renew it and they didn't. Then someone else grabbed it. Which is annoying to say the least.

Which ISP are you with Roger?

I would complain to them with some fortitude.

The thought of ISPs becoming political scares the bejeezus out of me!

I am with f2s (Freedom2surf). I have lodged an "enquiry" on line from their service page as to why it is down. I find it hard to believe they have done it deliberately.

Thanks. I'll wait to hear. If the reply is 'interesting' please let me know privately as I may try to interest the press.

Understood re private feedback.

Access to this was blocked at around 9:30AM this morning. My TRACERT gave the following:

C:\DOCUME~1\USER>tracert safespeed.org.uk

Nobody else is apparently having any problems accessing this site. apparently the main servers are in Seattle.

Could you please advise? All the techies are confident that it is something to do with my ISP, ie you!

Thanks

Roger

Just seen this on the PH thread:
Quote:
Works fine here. Sounds daft but you I'd get you friend to do the usual malware scan (Spybot S & D, AdAware SE, Windows Defender, install, update, run, reboot in to safe mode, run). Then try again; it's quite common for spyware to knakker one or two websites but leave the rest working fine.

Given the tracert routing I find this hard to believe. Nevertheless the easiest way for me to eliminate this possibility fully is to try a different PC. Stand by.....

Nope. Had to use a proxy on a totally separate PC that had not been connected on my home network in some weeks and that, at work, accessed SS successfully last Thursday.
