If all goes to plan we're moving servers this weekend.

We can move servers quite quickly but the nameserver change will take some time to ripple through.

The forums will be locked on the 'old' server around late evening Friday and transferred to the new server immediately. Once on the new server the forums will be unlocked. This should be under an hour.

Any delay you experience being able to connect to the new server will be waiting for your ISP to update their domain name records.

The new servers will give us much more speed and much more disc space. The forums have been causing problems from time to time on the old servers due to demand.

Apart from being patient, you don't need to do anything. All links and web addresses will remain EXACTLY the same.

Can you put the IP of the new here before you lock please, Paul? It will maintain continuity while DNS catches up with itself ;-)

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: safespeed.org.uk
Address: 66.29.129.114

This is the old one so when it doesn't say that then it must have rolled over :)

Of course, you would also know that you were on the old server because all the threads would be locked - so no need to use nslookup etc.

The point is that if you have the IP address of the new server, you should be able to use that to connect to the new server even if your ISP (or whichever name services you use) hasn't caught up. It isn't a matter of discovering when your ISP has caught up, it's a matter of being able to see the latest posts and being able to post yourself.

When we moved the SABRE phpBB forums (just to a new server with the same host) it cocked up the search index, and it's still not right three months later.

I don't know whether that's something you'll have to be careful with here.

I'll do what I can with IP addresses, folks, but remember that clicking on any 'fully qualified link' will zap you back to the old server until DNS catches up.

True, but unless I'm mistaken, links within the forums about the forums are relative and should work, relatively speaking ;-)

Yes that's true, also people know the IP they can stick an entry in their hosts file until such time as propagation is complete.

Are the forums closed at the moment, as the lack of posts today is a bit spooky? I would have expected a lot of comment about the Budget :x

I've been avoiding the budget. Maybe it's so terrible everyone is busy making pickets/weapons...?

Not closed at all, just quiet. It's business as usual until late Friday evening.

The forums will go down at 10pm this evening.

The new server is at 66.29.138.186 and the forums should be working there by about 11pm.

It will take a while for the DNS to catch up and connect to the new server automatically.

As soon as possible I will post a messages to the web site front page identifying the currently accessed server.

It seems to have gone well. Almost everything seems to have settled down nicely. I'm having a few issues with mailboxes on the new server.

Any problem reports?

Only that the DNS appears not to have propogated yet, but its no big deal, just copy the IP and paste it over the domain url any time a page from the old server loads.

I'm connected through Virgin, so it's Virgin's nameserver that I use. It was updated in 45 minutes.

Mine rolled over in about an hour. If you keep trying your pc will often cache the wrong answer which is why it might not show up for a while. Reboot, reconnect, leave it for an hour then try again. Your isp may run a cacheing nameserver which might make it take longer to roll around. Sometimes up to 48 hours

Mine's still not rolled over, but most (not all) is easily accessible by using the IP. Curiously I am unable to get to the new admin page, but I'm confident I will soon (I get presented with the link, so I have the right privs - it's just DNS taking its time I think).

I've rolled over nicely now - and can confirm administration capability having successfully eliminated about a dozen imposter spammer registrations. Well done to the folk behind the scenes.

Edit: Before anyone else adds the rejoinder, yes the rollover was very good for me ;-)
