Found this quite shocking post on the Cycling Plus forums. It appears that they are of the opinion that those who pose a greater risk on our roads should die rather than be given the opportunity to learn to become better drivers!

Frankly I am unsurprised, having read some of the drivel on that site, that this is the sum of their reasoning!

i'm sure we could quote plenty of posts from any forum out of context and have a good rant too.

I suspect that that was the whole point of the post Ed.
It's highlighting a widespread practice lately on C+ of whipping up hysteria by quoting (usually with no context) posts made here on Safespeed.

There are one or two voices of reason on C+.... who are getting swamped by rabid posting on the part of others, whose motives I could only guess at.
All I can think is that their arguments are so shaky that they feel the need to undermine ours by any means possible. :(

Quite.

I also find the venom with which they post somewhat disturbing. Hardly conducive to a rational exploration and exchange of ideas.

It wasn't posted out of context, indeed the quoted post was repoduced in it's entirety.

Yes Robin, I noticed that too when I scanned through that forum.
On a seperate note: it is quite disturbing to see how some of those posters are willing to maintain and widen the gulf between road user groups. It need not be this way.

That's pretty mild, haven't you seen the C+ "D Block" solution - remove seat belts & build in a spike in the middle of the steering wheel?

Because those people are doing all they can in an attempt to discredit the SS campaign.

Well...."all they can" is not really all that much in the grand scheme of things.

I do find it rather odd how keen they are to discredit Paul. I know he is the figurehead of this campaign as far as they are concerned, but there are enough people here with similar opinions and minds of their own that an attack on any one is not likely to sway anyone else as to our validity of purpose.

I personally take exception at how they like to run, in primary-schoolchild fashion, to whichever editor has published Paul's latest quote, and start tattling about alleged information regarding law-breaking. One would hope that most people of any consequence are able to look at the case presented on it's merits and give little credence to the personal attacks and rantings of these 'crazies', but at the same time, if you throw enough mud there is a danger that some will stick!

The biggest gripe I have with them, however, is the way in which they quote contributors to this board out of context, in such a way to intentionally misrepresent their true meaning, before claiming that the fact it has been posted here means that the campaign as a whole is in agreement with whatever heinous misinterpretation they have concocted. They then apply their seemingly boundless obtusity to the concept that they too are capable of (and indeed several have) registering here and posting their own brand of drivel, with no question of it being in some way linked to the campaign.

Thus we arrive at this thread. It is clear from even a cursory browse of their site that a proportion of their users hold some very extreme views, and many will not hesitate to wish harm, suffering or loss on others. The difference between those people and the fictitious 'terrorist apologists' they claim infest these forums is that they wish the atrocities on non-cyclists which is, to their somewhat twisted way of thinking, much more acceptable.

As long as a vocal, and somewhat disturbed, minority such as we see running riot over at C+ continue to poison the more impressionable users over there with their 'them and us' mentality towards non-pushbike road users we will continue to see a certain breed of cyclist on the roads who revels in the shudder they send down the spines of motorist and pedestrian alike with their utterly arrogant use of shared space.

Granted the C+ forums may be pro-cycling, but they are most certainly not pro-road-safety.

We have plenty of cyclists on here and they all seem quiet normal rational people to me. What is the demographic that uses C+?

On a cycling forum I would expect it to be awash with Lycra clad, expensive bike riding race monkey's looking for tips on speed, nutrition and endurance, with sprinkling of lefty commutors that don't like cars much.

But they do seem like a bunch of militants.

It is a pitty that they get the wrong end of the stick about SS. Every one on here just seems to want safer roads for all.

:scratchchin:

How about.. er..

Sustained blatant untruths posted about members of my wife's family for starters..

Libellous comments..

Vulgar abuse

Making posts stating as fact they follow some cult such as Scientology. As I hinted in another thread.. I would not want anyone who does follow this practice to feel offended as they have the right to choose this as something they "feel right for them" .. same as Jehovah's Witnesses, Moonies, Protestants, Muslims, Catholics, Jews, agnostics, atheists .. are free to choose in a society which purports to be "multicultural and inclusive" to chuck back the politically correct stance as advocated by the Grauniad  which they devoutly believe in..

Something else which cannot be discussed in public .. but which the management at C+ are aware of.. but short of closing the site and having a reader only subscription posting access .. they cannot really police it.

But if C+ management made this decision.. those posting the garbage who clearly do not read the magazine (where is their time ) would then accuse us of "closing the site down to them" somewhere in cyber space.

What feedback there is on the mag (scant to non -existent) seems to criticise the magazine rather negatively.

For example .. the rides and "the map"

Yes.. they go on the rides around here that we are well aware of. But .. we live here... the tourists do not .. and they will want to have some idea of rides when planning a short trip here.. same as I will read up the rides they describe in C+, Mountain Bike rags, CW, and even the AA mags  I may not know that area.. that piece may whet my apetite to explore a bit.. so I see nowt wrong with it.

Number of other useful articles .. such as reviews on bike gear, latest bikes on market.. just the same interesting read as Autocar's review of both the new Jag and the new Mondeo..

It's an opinion by the journalists. Like Clarkson, Hammond and May will comment on the cars they drive on Top Gear. May decide to have a closer look based on their opinions .. and then form my own

But that's the magazine . Personally .. I think it makes  very pleasant and informative reading on the whole. I do not buy each month.. but this is a large family - and we share subscriptions and pass around the family living within a reasonable radius. I will also say that a number of Future's titles are well worth a dipsy into. My sister-in-law - Krissi and her husband buy the Camera one each month and pass on to me. I buy the Computer one each month and pass on to them. IG gets C+ and passes it on to me and Willi (Wildy's cousin .. the one who posts sometimes to a motoring site as "willispeedifonlyhecouldgiven halfachance" :hehe: His little joke.. along with his neighbour .. who is rather tall and shaves his legs to get his speeds uphill and down dale on a bike :rotfl:

So .. lot of positives I can offer about Future and its titles then. I like the work they publish. I find their magazines well presented, easy on the eye, pleasant to read overall and designed for a wide readership at varying levels. They have to cater for all levels of expertise after all .. else few would subscribe

As it is, the notorioius internet just re-registers after each ban.. which really shows how much respect he does NOT have for any rules. All that one is good at doing is showing himself up to be a deluded, psychotic and deranged blaggard. This person cannot be employed. No one can have the time to read all of C+. all of this and other motoring sites... just to see what the Swiss have posted up next.. and then make up bizarre stories about them just because the troll has no counter argument against the points they all make.

But ed .. be honest with me, my wife and IG.

would you not be offended by someone who does not even know you posting as if proven fact REPEATEDLY .. unsubstantiated, illogical and quite frankly bizarre posts that

1. a family of well educated professionals tried to close a forum of zero interest to anyone other than a handful of militant zealots as few serious riders have the time to post endlessly and read every post on this and other motoring sites

2. harrassed staff on the magazine. Only number known is that of the switch board and Andreas and Mike only contacted their legal chap who does reply with some courtesy and understanding .. but tends to pass the buck to the "moderator" who in turn passes the "buckW" back to the legal bod.

3. then posts that this family follow a minority cult .. (and in doing so confirms himself to be even more of a bigot and a fool than his thousands of posts to date.)

 and I will shout this for the apparently hard of hearing and comprehension
:bunker:

FOR RECORD

THE SWISS FAMILY ARE VERY PROUD AND VERY SURE OF THEIR POSITION IN THEIR PROFESSIONS TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY ARE OF A CHRISTIAN FAITH AND ARE CERTAINLY NO ASHAMED TO ADMIT THAT THEY ATTEND A CATHOLIC CHURCH, CONFESS THEIR SINS, LIGHT CANDLES AND SING HYMNS AND THEN PRACTISE ARCHERY ON SUNDAY AFTERNOONS!

Come to think of it.. we would have to be Catholic given the number of kids we seem to have produced. :hehe:

That's what you get folks.. for makin' "whoopy" after all .. :yikes:

TBH I've wished death on a few less able drivers in my time.

From my couple of glances that c+ place does seem a bit of a loony bin though, but out of intrest do several "regulars" rule the roost? the thing with many forums is a clique of berks with social difficulties can quite easily overule the place, and while they many be a small minority in terms of the registered user base their post counts tell a different story. they set the tone, flaming anyone with a differing opinion, desperately trying to impress their peers and the whole thing ends up as relevent as the pub in that werewolf film.

generally most cyclists are okay, sensible road users, although there is a sizable minority of lunatics that I attribute to the following:

  • People without the basic intelligence/skill to pass the examination standard for any form of motorised transport, thus the bicycle remains the only form of personal transport they can legally use. also explains idiot mopedists on l plates.
  • people who've been banned from driving, possibly repeatedly under threat of jail time, so like above have only the bicycle option open to them.
  • do-gooders doing their bit to help save the world, so generally don't have a clue how the real world actually works and that includes most traffic flow & control systems, but make up for their lack of knowledge with an arrogent sense of superiority because they're saving the world.

feel free to add your own.

I'm not sure how one or two of them manage to fit any cycling in, with the post rate they maintain!

Maybe they ride excersise bikes with a keyboard on the bars! :D
